Hi everyone, coming from Cape Town I’ve found it hard to find anything to replace regular races that with limited traffic or on closed roads (like the western cape cycling league and crits at Killarney raceway).

If any regular does exist in joburg on closed/safe roads please let me know, as right now the Engen to Engen classic seems to be the only alternative I could find.

Otherwise, I was thinking about having a biweekly informal race that could happen at suikerbosrand nature reserve on sundays (with rotating points it could be finish so it would suit different types of riders), but not sure if there will be enough people keen to make this work. Let me know if anyone has any ideas or suggestions.

I had the same experience about 2 years when I made the move. There is a crit series that runs during the year. Just search for east side crits. I have never done it before but I believe its well organised.

I doubt racing in Suikerbosrand would be appealing for most weekend worriors. Its brutal terrain, tricky decents and probably would be a mission logistically to put together.

There is basically no winter road racing, the roads are horrible and I have found cycling scene to be quite whatsapp based. If you are not in the whatsapp groups, you can struggle to find any decent action.

But on the upside, there is plenty of fitness to be gained from the never ending hills and  altitude.

Very well organized, Jeremy Maartens. He's a coach as well.

SBR should not be raced under any circumstances by amateurs. Countless stories of severe injuries and deaths.

Where have you moved to, OP?

It feels like there is a race every morning around 4:40 am amongst our club riders, if you are in the east rand area.

whahahahaha, it certainly does feel like it.

Would be very careful of organising anything inside SBR, it's a provincial reserve and they're pretty sticky about events. Informal or otherwise, SA Road Champs went through there last year and the organisers had to fulfill a lot of paperwork and liability to do so.

Something like East Side Crits could be a good starter, Northcliff used to do parking lot crits every Thursday or so. May be an idea to resurrect?

SBR suggestion was a bit shortsighted by me, makes total sense that it would be a bad idea. East side crits seems to fit what I am looking for thank you.

Moved to rosebank.
