Afternoon all,

I have started enjoying Road Riding and currently have a 2014 Pinarello Treviso Commuter bike that is doing decently albeit its age to scratch the proverbial itch.

I have an itch to upgrade and from all my reading I am leaning towards an Endurance style Road Bike.

I then bumped into a 2020 Canyon Endurace CF SL 8.0 Disc for sale. It’s in a reasonable to good condition and has the following components:

Wheels: Zip 303s Carbon Wheels

Brakes: Shimano Ultegra

Crankset: Shimano Ultegra 2x11 Speed

Derailleurs: Shimano Ultegra Di2

The price is R47 500 with some extras thrown in.

I am not experienced in bike pricing so need some guidance. I am not rushed and would rather buy the right bike (new or used) and also open to suggestions on alternatives.

Need to inspect that drive train.. my concern would be the wear to the groupset.. ask how much it’s been riden(roughly).. look for obvious signs of a crash, scratches on the side of the shifters etc are a dead give away.. if all looks good, go for it.. will be a nice bike

Sounds like a good bike at a decent price, is it the correct size for you? if so Nice bike, MVDP can not be wrong.

An endurance bike is definitely the way to go, coming from a commuter. Shimano Di2 is awesome and the older 2x11 is a long way from being obsolete (even though 2x12 has been around for a while).

The price appears very good for those wheels and drivetrain. Shimano drivetrain components are not expensive to replace and last a long time.

Appreciate the guidance and feedback here. Let me sleep on it.

If I were to consider an alternative new bike, what are some of the options to consider for a budget of up to R65k?

The Titan Racing Valerian seems to deliver a lot of bang for buck but unsure of geometry.

I presume it's the one on bikemarket? If so, I'd highly recommend you inspect it in person. Chain seems nearly done, as do the chainrings. Steerer is cut, so you've gotta know that's your fit, and it will impact resale. Price is VERY good considering the wheels, so factor that in. Skepticism is key.

If you're set on canyon, and dont have an issue riding a "womans" bike... I'd go for this. I've seen it at the store and it loos mint condition. Plus you get the fancy seat post

I think size is the same?

wheels are a downgrade but save you won't have drivetrain costs.

If you're not 100% confident on the bike, shallower wheels are better.

There are some other good options out there for the price. Check some of the trek deals (gear change has some on closeout). A few great deals on merida reactos and sculturas out there

Hi Ross, thanks so much for the in depth look. It is indeed the one on BikeMarket. I did look at it in person and clearly my lack of experience shows but did spot the chain ring but missed the cut steerer which is probably a deal breaker for me.

Not necessarily set on Canyon Endurace but in my desktop research they seem to come highly recommended in this category.

I will look at some of these other options. Thanks so much.

Well worth buying a "chain wear checker".  Fairly cheap tool, and something you will use again.

Take it with when inspecting a secondhand bike.

A worn chain is not the issue, it is the corresponding wear on the rest of the drivetrain that quickly become very expensive.

Remove the wheel and "feel" the bearings.  Bearings are cheap enough, but again it speaks to the overall level of maintenance.

Bike fit .... well worth investing in a bike fit on your current bike.  If for no reason other than getting YOUR seat position, reach, drop etc measured.  Once you have these dimensions it is just a tape measure to check if the next bike is in your size range.

PS - "L" or "M" in different makes are often not the same.  Best to know your dimensions and make sure you buy the right bike.

100% back what Chris said.

Looking at options, do you mind sharing your height etc. I know you said endurance road bike. The valerian certainly isn't endurance, and the category is hard to cover these days (domane, endurace, defy, roubaix ans Scultura endurace are few and far between)

What about this... I've beeb ogling it for ages but I'm way too big for it: https://bruces.co.za/products/merida-reacto-4000-carbon-2022

Unless you are set on disc brake. You save yourself a whackload, get a brand new bike, and go for some lush wheels when you feel you need/deserve them. It's a stunning looking thing.

Plus 11 speed parts are just a bit cheaper to replace

Hi Ross, out of interest. How did you spot that the steerer was cut?

Just in case its misconstrued, its not necessarily a bad thing, provided it's your bike, and you know it fits.

Most of us cut our steerers, but when we know how our bike fits and we accept it impacts resale somewhat. When buying a used bike, if you don't have spacers, you have no height adjustability on stem positioning. It means if the bikes too big, or too low, you'll have to fit an overly short, or crazy angled stem on.
