Hello all,

I do not have much experience with this as things have changed so much since I was into bikes many years ago. I have a Sworks bike which I am very happy about but I was gifted a XG-1299 Eagle Cassette 12 Speed 10-50. I now need to find a second hand groupset etc that would work with this. I know that this is a higher end cassette and I dont necessarily want to match the quality/weight so would like to find something perhaps midrange. Any help on this would be amazing as I am not certain exactly what is needed and advise here on things to consider would really benefit this project. Thanks in advanceĀ

Hi Dave, best to understand what (edit: groupset) you already have on the bike? And whether it is worthwhile to upgrade or sell the cassette or pay it forward.

Thanks Michael.Ā

I am not sure I 100% understand. Are you suggesting that I get that kit and then all I need is to get a new chain?Ā

I don't want to change anything unnecessarily but I do want to take off my old 1x11 speed as I struggle on uphill's a bit

I do not think you can use a 12 speed chain on your current 11 speed chainring. So for 12 speed you would need a 12 speed chainring.Ā

In my opinion, 12 speed eagle will be a downgrade from your current system in terms of shifting performance. If you are struggling up the hills, might be less faf to just install a smaller chainring on your current setup.

*Edit, I see you already have a 12 speed eagle chainring matched with an 11 speed cassette.

Does your new Cassette fit on your existing Wheel ?

Yes exactly. You get that kit and a new chain and you can then use your existing parts with the 10-52 cassette.Ā

Hi all,Ā

Thanks for all the responses. It seems that there are quite a few contradicting ideas. However, I do appreciate everyone's input. I will need to go and ask some advice from a local expert I think. It is quite a bit of money to make a mistake on.Ā

Thanks again

GX = mid range

X01= more expensive

XX1= most expensive

You would need the following to use that 1299 (XX1) cassette:

- 12 speed eagle rear derailleur (GX, X01 or XX1 will all work)

- 12 speed shifter (GX, X01 or XX1)

- 12 speed chain (GX, X01, XX1 or KMC 12speed…NOT shimano 12spd)

The crankset can stay and will work fine on 12 speed.Ā

You currently have 11 spd XX1 on your bike…ie top of the line previous gen…

You have a 10-42, 11 speed casette. Widely regarded as o e of the best/lightest available 11speed cassettes. Hence suggestions that it will likely be better than getting peasant level 12spd(GX) and that you need to consider if you really need that 50T granny gear. Its a whole lot of money to make that R8k casette work.

This, I would sell that cassette... But good luck.
