Hey guys I have an entry level Schwinn Fastback Sport that I'm looking at making a bit lighter and 'better'. I've been riding for about 7 months and am looking at upgrading a bit. It is standard with no-name stem, seatpost and handlebars and weighs in at approx 10kgs. It has truativ cranks and brakes and sora, tiagra compontents- so real basic stuff! Does anyone have anything affordable for me to purchase that will make this beast a bit lighter or 'better'?

What is your Budget.

Someone is selling a complete Rival groupset for R5500, will lost at least a kilo or two and then a good set of wheels.

BUT YOUR BUDGET PREDICTS

Sammajoor my bike cost me just over R4000 so as cheap as possible really. Looking for things that people no longer use or have just lying in their garage- nothing fancy but just slightly better than what I have. I put Easton Vista wheels on a while ago so that made it a bit lighter- but gee she is still heavy! My budget: approx R1000 (without sounding cheap). If I can't afford what people have I'll just have to pedal harderLOL

Keith, a better option would be to ride the bike for a bit longer & save up for a better bike. There are always a few good deals to be found on 2nd hand road bikes if you're patient. Anyway, all the training you do on your current heavy bike will just make you stronger!

Mampara I was looking at them, but would they be lighter than what I have now? Its the type of thing I'm looking for.

Keith, yes it will be but I do not know by how much. The thing about good parts is that they grow with the upgrade. These will look great on your current bike and even better when you put them on a R20 000 frame. If you buy quality first time round, you do not need to spend any money on that part again, unless you start all over again.

Mampara I'm really happy with my bike and how it performs- even if it did cost R4000 (which I know in cycling terms is nothing!). I'm just looking at dropping a bit of weight. I don't need a R20000 bike with all the gizmos cause I know my riding is not up to that standard to get the full moneys worth. No offense to anyone here cause I know from looking at the members pictures you guys have AWESOME bikes!

Keith, it depends how fast you really are. I'm going to assume (wrongly or rightly) that you are between a 3 and 4 hour argus/amashovashova rider.

Spending R5k(at least) to drop 2kg on your bike has more of a mental than a physical advantage.

you can get that same mental advantage by riding your sora equipped bike past full carbon 30grand racing machines with weak engines.

I only say this because your budget is 1 grand. Maybe save that cash for when things break or on better clothing, a comfy rider is a faster rider.

Shebeen I haven't done either races yet but I get what you saying. I'll just have to pedal harder so when I do get a light bike I'll be blitzBig%20smile

So no one got anything they no longer use that I could make my bike lighter with and be more blitz? Donations anyone? Big%20smile
