Was a bit shocked this morning when I ...

went to the LBS for a new mtb rear tyre (tubeless).

Conti Mountain King 2.2 - R 644 ??? Why?

Some others I looked at because I have purchased them in the last 12 months:

Maxxis Crossmark 2.1. Purchased a pair of them exactly 12 months ago. R 280 each then. Now R 480!!

Kenda Karma 2.1 R 310 in March this year. Now R 410.

GEAX 2.1 R 390 in April this year. Now 460.

I settled for the Kenda Nevegal 2.1 at R 370 simply because they were the cheapest on the rack. Did not get any discount with my CycleLab membership card as I was told that it was already a good price. WTF?! It's the price on the item! Thanks guys.

There were some warnings earlier this year that we are in for a shock with prices being increased at their source. The week rand doesn't help things either i guess.

I also got a shock when I went shopping for tyres yesterday. Can not believe the stuff is more expensive then my car's tyres. BTW, the Geax is R420 before discount at Westdene cycles.

My bike puts a MUCH bigger smile on my face than my car does, so I don't really mind spending more on bike tyres vs car tyres. I looked that the conti's yesterday, but at over R600 I decided to rather go with the Nevegals.

Well, it seems, at this rate of inflation (no pun intended), I'll have to spend even more time on the spinning bike, and only leave the real biking for weekends.

Talking about spinning, I really enjoy the early morning classes at Sunninghill VA. Especially on Mondays and Thursdays. Always feel like a good puke afterwards.

CWC sent out an e-mail this morning. They have Conti tubeless tyres for R300.

I find it very difficult to justify spending more than that on a MTB tyre.

I raised the big difference in costs between normal and tubeless tyres in another post, but nobody was able to come up with a good reason why the tubeless variety is so much more expensive.

Anyway guys like Dirt Rider and Johan Bornman say it's fine to ride non-tubeless tyres as tubeless.

Jules, true tubeless tyres have thicker sidewalls and bead for a better seal. They are also heavier. But normal tyres works fine.

Specialized 2Bliss Fast Track LK and Captain Control offer really good value at the moment at under R320. FPC Paulshof had the Fast Track and Cyclelab had the Captain on Wednesday.
