Well I guess I will never be disappointed then. Seems a crappy attitude to have though, I do expect our sportsmen to perform.

You're right. I'm actually an optimist, but just as frustrated as you at our sports performances!

Curiously, I just did a google search with the words: 'South Africa wins' and top result was this one:

20 Oct 2007: South Africa ended England's reign as world champions as they claimed the World Cup for the second time.

That's something we can use for four years. Well, just over three years now. Smile

South Africa did win a cricket match the other day, but that doesn't really count as a sport does it?

I think we'll get one, two maybe even three medals in Beijing ? Malaudzi in the 800m, Nhlapo in the BMX and maybe, just maybe, Ramaala can finish the Games on a good note with a medal in the men's marathon...

See, I'm very optimistic!

I am generally an optimist but nothing seems to put me in a worse mood than watching the Boks play badly, taht and Australian referees who are watching only half a game.

I saw one of our guys do really well in the steeple chase heat, so maybe another chance there.

Try this: Lower your expectations. It's only sport.

Clap

watched an interview with schoeman. totally liked what he said.

the SA public are to fickle. he had just swum his personal best and we as the public should be proud of that.

To all our athletes, give it your best and make us proud!! ClapClapClap

If your personal best is not alongside world best, then it is still worth a serious looking into. Even if we break every SA record, but not winning on World stage then we are lacking. I support the athletes fully, make no mistake.

But I have no doubt that SASCOC and our various Sports bodies need a serious wake up call!!!

I do not for one second believe the SA athletes at the games didnt want to give it 200%, they just lacking the correct framework of preparation. And that is the responsability of the Sports bodies and SASCOC.

Denmark didnt even feature in track cycling just four years ago and now they will walk home with either Gold or Silver in team pursuit. Danish federation invested in Salzwedel as coach and left the ball in his hands without any political interference.

In SA sport we have more politicians than we have qualified individuals( especially in cycling)..

...and Salzwedel was employed by the Aussies to get their cycling up to world-beating standard in the 1990s.

You are 100% correct, Barry, talent and commitment from the athletes is something we do have. What we lack is structure, facilities, professional coaches and most importantly, a plan.

What I wanna know is how we fix this over the coming

8 to 12 years. Is it possible to put something together that will roll outside

of a central organization, for example if cycling raised its own funding. Thing

is, the knowledge of how this should work, and ideas of who should be heading

things up are there. If the finance was there, in the form of corporate

sponsorship, would it be possible, or is there simply to much red tape?.?

The thing is the British, of

all people, have shown that you can turn total failure into sporting success,

despite being practically allergic to anything even remotely 'elite', and the

beauty of their model is that it has been the 'small' minority sports - rowing

and cycling, which have taken care of business themselves, to staggeringly

successful outcomes. So much so that now track and field looks like the poor

relation, with even swimming turning a major corner.

Unfortunately sport has become big business. When your team doesnt deliver then they get caned. And so they should. They earn huge salaries and people pay big bucks to watch their team.

Anyone bought a ticket for a rugby test recently?
