Considering the abuse we put those bikes through it's amazing that WE didn't need replacement parts!!  LOL

BMX cycling is an affordable, accessible (hip) way to get youngsters to exercise and involved in cycling as a sport.

THe bikes are simple, and affordable (in comparison to a campy kitted colnago race bike).

THe sport develops confidence and bike handling skills such as trick riding, jumps ext.

THe sport requires exercise and power.

It is a great way to get kids into track and MTB.

It is safer than playing in the traffic

A natural progression is birth BMX, MTB, Track, Road, Track, MTB, Death.

That's a blast from the past.

I had a mate whose parents brought him a Skyway from the States. This was just as the craze was dying and we were getting too big for these things. Awesome bike. What a waste!

Another very clear memory is whacking your shins with those sharp pedals.

BMX world cup is here in 2009 (anyone have a weblink for it, UCI or local organiser?)

The bloody Aussies have already hosted UCI BMX pre Olympics to...

"South

Australia will once again shine in the world?s cycling spotlight this

weekend as the best BMX riders compete for Beijing Olympics qualifying

points at the 2008 UCI BMX Supercross event.

The

three-day event will be staged on a 310-metre indoor track, being built

with 200 truckloads of sand and clay at Adelaide Showgrounds in a

record 60 hours.

Together with the Australian BMX Championships, being held the following weekend, the events are expected to attract 3000 visitors and generate $3 million for the State?s economy.

Tourism

Minister Jane Lomax-Smith joined with UCI BMX Commission president Abe

Schneider today to preview the track ahead of heats later today.

Dr

Lomax-Smith says the event is part of South Australia?s growing

calendar of major events, including a brilliant blend of international

sporting events."

If we get half that kind of turnout and exposure it'll be an awesome time here

I've got 'n 60mm scar on my shin from the pedal taking some flesh right down to the bone. It hurt like hell and I just continued on my way. Only when I saw the blood did it sink in that I'm actually hurt.

Bear Traps? Isn't that what they were called? I've got BMX shins even to this day.

Really stupid to try and compare watts with a road cyclist.Cavendish has to sprint after 5hours in the saddle.

Would be better to compare there figures with a track cyclist that train specifically for short hard efforts!

Maybe Chuncky can give us an idea of the power output of a track rider?

BMX'ers on the other side has to have amazing skill, think Robbie McEwen also raced BMX?

Bear Traps.... man oh man is that a blast from the past Big%20smile

We used to line people up sideways on , like 5, 6, 7, 8  (no one wanted to be on the far end..... hahahaha) and jump them. We'd pedal like crazy down a good slope... ramp was made from scrap wood and a few bricks under the end. Remember a few very scary front first landings, almost like stalling in mid air...... awesome memories. We thought we were unbreakable, gravel rash and scars on the chin were all worn with pride. LOL

Or you just stacked bricks to see who could go the highest from a ramp that was just 2 bricks high.

The only way you could pimp your bike was with checkerd or starry pads and grips. When those mushroom grips came in it was the best thing out there.

Track cycling is boring.  And I have quite a few mates who have tried to get me involved.

And by not getting involved you're missing out on the most adrenaline inducing discipline the sport of cycling can attest (BMX is close).

Don't knock it TILL you've tried it, and don't be ashamed to admit you're too scared to give it a bash, you wouldn't be the first or the last Embarrassed
