heading should read What went wrong for the SA Olympic team... everything. The Olympics is just a result of 4 years preparation. Like there was, and when the best got sent there... they should have stayed at home BLA BLA BLA.... Once you have someone with interest in improving at the top, it will work its way down to grassroot level(ie schools, preprimary schools...) Once the culture is set at an early age, things will improve. Take for example Bulletjie rugby, its apparently a huge success. Why, not only because its rugby, because time and effort is put into it. If only SA can be made to believe that sport doesn't end with rugby, cricket and soccer. Theres many other. Hell, I probably did more sport in my life than we had athletes in the Olympics.

THe bold bit is what I believe.  It makes no sense to spend indecent amounts of money on a small group of elite atheletes to perform, when basic youth development is not supported.

Here is a bit of a quandary.  Most kids (5year-10 years) biggest hero is their DAD, (35-49 years) and not some idiot that wins the TdF or the Olympics.  SO here each of us can do something.  ie be visible and active in sport and fitness.  (Kiddo will then take the hint).  BE A HERO.

However, the next bit is more difficult. Supporting the tyke.  Remember winning is not as important as participation and technique (that is until about 14 years old).  Here schools sport is critical, and oops this is where it falls apart.  Yes there are junoir leagues ext, but the cost MONEY, lots of money, and are focused on WINNING and not technique and enjoyment.

Lastly, and unfortunately where the money is and the attention is, is university, and  U23 sport, where the best technique should be developed and augmented with a winning attitude.  Here however, too often only "talent and strength" is "identified" and we land up with sportsmen with no technique, skills or humility.

When growing oak trees you start by digging a hole and planting an acorn.  You do not go and grap a bush and prune it to look like an OAK.

"Revelations are only now emerging of the R11m the

department of sport has spent on the disastrous SA sports expo in

Beijing and the 14 officials who flew over to China, booking into the

Westin Hotel, where George Bush stayed recently, at R10 000 a night."

this reminds me of Adelle inctroduction in Ride mag a month or two ago. For the boys birthday his dad took him and some friends to Wimpby, Dad dressing as Batman/Superman, those underpants, how can someone like that be a hero?, what a plonker. Goodness.. do something creative.AngryAngryAngryAngry  shows the imagination doing the rounds in this country.

I am lost here?? - I seldom read Ride Magazine and when I do I seldom agree or find merit in any of Adelles features.

...But, be that as it may..............

Which boys are we referring to??

Whats wrong with a Dad taking his kids to Wimpy and dressing up.

Is it not rather presumptious to pass judgement on that family.?

Wow, that's a cool dad! Not sure I'd go as far as to dress as Spidey myself, but I respect that dad for being so committed to making his kid's birthday even more memorable. I bet that dad is his son's biggest hero, the way it should be.

Jeez, thats what a hero dad is... one who is willing to make his name tot for his kids sake....

I live for my boys... even if every adult in the world laughs at me for what I get up to with them, as long as my boys think what Im doing is cool, thats all that matters..

Stop relying on past heros. Get new stars in. Oh and don't just bargain on swimming for medals. But it is typical, for some reason we have lost the ability to think ahead!

I'm not saying its wrong... doing that just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd rather arragne for something like a mtb ride somewhere. Or a BMX outing one morning. thinking of it, Batman/Superman on a bicycle. Dead That article made me think, at my nieces 6th birthday, all the girls were dressed in jeans like 25year olds, had make up on. WTF??? Yes, they played games, but hell. Children aren't children anymore by the looks of it.

ClapClapyea batgirl you 100% right when they leave politics outta sport and pay more attention to the needs of the athletes then things might go better but until then i am afraid we will always be scraping the bottom of the barrel CryCry
