Shimano Is as only as good as your mechanic is, If your mechanic is the best, then the XTR is the best, smooth and reliable, but on the other hand, if your mechanic is not so hot then neither is your XTR.

While SRAM is a hard but precise shift, all the time.

But I guess that's why I ride XTR, simply because I have the best mechanic........

I don't know of any new Sram MTB products except for their new suspension forks and some brakes.

As for Sram vs Shimano to me it's a personal choice, Sram work on a 1:1 ratio and Shimano on a 2:1, the new Shimano shifters have been improved quite heavily though.

I have Shimano XTR on my MTB's and Sram Red on my roadbike.

The RED is a sublime groupset to say the least.

I used shimano for many many years and was alwasy happy. But then tried Sram and. . .well. . .wow!!

Iv completely converted everything.

Sram has a very 'solid' and quick change, where as shimano is a very gentle shift, and I found that often one would have to have a 'easy pedal' for the gears to change when Sram changes when you want it to change.

Personal choice (and budget). I like my thumb up shifting and forefinger down shifting and could not get us to using thumb for both when I tried a Sram equiped bike. But I got the new XT and you have a choice of either. guess what, I'm actually using both depending on where my hand is on the bars. If it's narrow I shift doen with my forefinger, when wide I use my thumb.

SRAM is by farthe best IMHO!!

Have been using it on the MTB for just over 2 years now and not ONE day of maintenance required yet....

Not one.

Did my Epic with SRAM with no mechanical issues.

That must have been a auto spell checker. I left out the "f" and the editor automatically subbed the "i" with a "*". Interesting.
