On the way home tonight I stopped at the BP garage in Pretoria North to fill my tank.

I pulled in at the 95UL pump and told the petrol jockey to fill the tank. Halfway through filling the tank I noticed that the price was showing R10,40/L and not R9,66/LAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

I went over the garage manger and pointed this out to her. She first tried to tell me that it is supposed to be R9,73/L. Then I showed her my logbook where I had paid R9,66 at another garage last week.

Long story short...She corrected the amount due, otherwise I would have paid almost R40 too much!!!!ShockedShockedShocked

I wonder how many motorists were ripped off before the mistake was noticed?

Keeping a logbook helps keep an eye on these shady garage owners, especially the ones who put up their price the day before a price increase takes place.

Funny how when the brent crude oil price goes up, petrol follows it almost immediately, but when crude goes down, petrol is slow to reflect the drop?

Manufacturers trying to milk the market as long as possible?

Everybody's out to make a buck. Where are your discount garages in your area. I noticed last weekend the Pick n Pay by the Sea Shell Garage in Durban had discounted prices.

Not the wholesaler, or the retailer. it's just how the sysem works.

When Crude is purchased it takes around 4-6 weeks to arrive and be offloaded into the refinery crude oil tanks. From there it is blended with other crudes and test before being pumped into the distillation column to make the basic products like gas (butane, Propane), Light naphtha, heavy naphtha, middle distillate (Illuminating kerosene, Diesel, Fuel Oil), bunkers and residues.

By the time the products end up in the retailers tanks, 8 weeks have elapased the crude price has either gone up or down. So the price you pay at the pump reflects the manufacturing cost 2months ago. he price is usually slow to come down due to under recovery of margin by the manufacturers so the DME reduces the recrease in price to assist with that recovery from the market.

Unscrupulous Retailers should be reported because what they are doing is illegal.

GoLefty is spot on.  The refineries (manufacturers) sell to the retailers (franchise garages) at a cost price fixed by the state.  Their margin is a fixed portion of the state set price.  I imagine some retailers have had problems with the big swings ie they would have bought at the old higher cost price and then should sell at the lower sell price.  They should however be absorbing this loss as they would have gained a few weeks ago when the price shift was the other way.  If they plan their stock properly the impact of this should be small.

Either way - selling above the state fixed price is illegal and you should retain the original slip and be reporting them.

I have never taken an ounce of notice, I like the idea of a logbook. I used to do that as a kid when every cent counted but have been neglegent over the years. Still gets up my nose that we even have to watch out for people like that............why cant they just be honest like us cyclists? Angry

Yeah' date=' seen several garages on the east doing this as well... [/quote']

who dares do that in benoni?Angry

what's the legal price? R9.60-odd?

R9,66/L for 95UL and R9,51/L for 93UL in GP. Diesel is not a regulated price and garages can charge whatever they want. Government only puts a maximum RRP on the diesel price
