Do you have lots of phlegm/cough after a hard race

A friend of mine got a bad chest infection (thats what we thought) and non-stop coughing within 2 days after the Trans Baviaans the other day.

In a pharmacy magazine I read that a study that whas done on sportsman/ladies indicated that its actually not a bacterial infection (requiring antibiotics) or a viral infection but rather inflammation (no bugs present)  in the lungs. Most people or doctors will immediately want to start with strong antibiotics to kill the bugs responsible but the study indicated that you must actually use other means to reverse this inflammation. We started using Locabiotal and cortisone and he had immediate improvement as this reversed the inflammation.

They mention that a ride above 80% of max heart rate for more than an hour can cause inflammation of the lungs.

I have EIA and am thus very susceptible to lung infections, the moment I get any sort of infection I go down to the doc, I know lots of antibiotics ain't great for you but it sure as hell beats being sick.Dead Racer X2008-09-13 09:16:18

Phlegm....so thats what you call it! I've been producing my fair share of phlegm since this mornings race...
In the Eastern Cape we know it as a "Transkei Oyster" Big%20smile

Thats interesting.  My first ride back after having a baby was at Harkerville in Knysna.  Bit of a tough ride for a first ride in months and I was at my max heart rate for almost the whole ride.  Afterwards I had a horribe dry cough and it felt like it was my chest and lungs were burning.  Guess this answers my question as to why!  Had the same thing yesterday after 6kms of uphill singletrack.

Sounds very familiar...someone told me it is "Sports induced asthma"..I take a anti histamine pill the morning of the race. I found this works for me to breath better. Something in the air makes my nose run like crazy and leave a wet trail behind like a snail. How absurd is this, mtbiker allergic to the outdoors, but the anti histamine makes it better
