With citrus degraeser and a tooth brush' date=' I use squirt a couple of time a week too. [/quote']

There's your problem.

Chains can only be cleaned effectively by generously flushing and rinsing it with degreaser. Citrus degreaser is good stuff but too expensive for the required procedure. Tooth brushes are best left for dental stuff and army rifles.

Put a quick link on your chain and cocktail-shake it in a bottle of degreaser. Do this as you wash your bike, returning to the cocktail shaker a few times with some vigorous shakes as you wash. Then, rinse and shake the chain until the rinse water runs clear and no grit can be felt as the chain is articulated.

Secondly, use oil. Any oil, but not a solid wax product like Squirt. This is rubbish. After it dries, it does not reflow into areas where the lubricant was pushed out and you run metal on metal. It also gunks up your pulleys and cannot be removed with degreaser since it that doesn't dissolve it.

Johan: make a FAQ and I'll sticky it for you' date=' else pm me for suggestions and I'll see what I can do (including phoning AdminWink)[/quote']

Thanks, I think we have the beginning of something useful. I'll give it some thought. You must keep in mind that it will probably be about 20 topics in total, so a sticky doesn't sound like the right solution. A link to a web page is perhaps better. In other words, one sticky with 20 bullet points hyperliniked to a page??

use fluid film - it works on bicycles, motorbikes, leather, industrial equipment, sewing machines, leathers, you name it - amazing stuff. wish i'd used it on my mtb sooner

Johan yeah sounds good. I can either host it on chainwheel.co.za or once it's ready, give Admin a call and get him to do something on the Hub.

Either way, even if you just drop me a normal e-mail with the stuff in text format we can get it sorted fairly quick. As always it's just getting the meat of the info, not the frills that counts...

I'm not sure which remark you're responding to so I can't put things in context. What is fluid film and where on a bike would you apply the stuff?

Ned endorses Squirt as the best wax lube he has used.
Edmund "Ned" Overend  started in mountain biking in the early 1980s. He was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1990 and the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2001. Even though he retired from Pro Mountain biking in 1996, he continued competing in endurance competitions like the XTERRA Triathlon, and regular road triathlons. While in professional mountain biking, Overend earned the nicknames "Deadly Nedly" and "The Lung", for he seemed difficult to beat and his aerobic endurance at altitude was phenonomenal, especially for a man of his age. Ned is now in charge of product testing at Specialized

?Squirt is the best lube I?ve used. It does the job -  stays on and stays clean?

Conrad Stoltz  is an athlete from South Africa. He competes in triathlons and was twice crowned World Champion of the XTERRA series of off-road triathlon races.
Stoltz started competing in the multi-sport disciplines of duathlon and triathlon through his involvement in cycling. He is most famous for his exploits in the XTERRA series of off-road triathlons where he claimed the World Championship in his rookie season (starting the season without sponsorship) in 2001 and successfully defended it the following year.
It is also in this series that he earned the nickname "Caveman" in all likelihood due to a combination of his large stature - he is 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) tall and weighs between 176 lb (80 kg) and 180 lb (82 kg) - and his speed on downhill sections of the mountain biking leg.
He recorded the fastest time in the cycling leg of the first ever Olympic triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics and usually the mountain biking leg is also his strongest of the three legs (due to his cycling background) that make up an off-road triathlon (the other two being swimming and trail running).
Conrad topped the log for the 2007 USA Xterra series and is now 2007 USA Champion. He went on to win the World Championships in 2007 in Hawaii and is truly the best Xterra tri-athlete in the world

"I have long been a fan of wax based lubricants for their cleanliness and resistance to attracting dirt but was disappointed with durability.  Squirt stays clean and is also the most durable lube I have used."
Travis Brown  is an American professional bicycle racer. He primarily competes in cross-country mountain bike and cyclo-cross races but has also raced on road bicycles from time to time. Brown started racing professionally in 1990 and partially retired at the end of the 2004 season.
Brown is now incidentally-sponsored racer for the TREK bicycle company, whose job is in product development and testing of these parts in racing environments. His long experience in racing- along with his long professed love of epic training rides- makes him an ideal tester for Trek bikes and equipment.
Travis is notable for the length of his competitive racing career. In 1990 he raced the first official UCI World Mountain Biking Championships in his hometown of Durango, CO, won the US National Champion MTB XC race in 1999 and won the Marathon National Championship at Mammoth Mountain California 2005. In 2006 he was Marathon National Champion again.

Discertation omitted in reply....

Aag ou Hendrik. Why don't you look in a dictionary and for once and all find out what sarcasm means. There was no sarcasm in my reply. Causticism is debatable. I thought you've abandoned your old ways. You resisted posing knee-jerk reactions to my posts for so long that I thought you've been cured. I was wrong.

I said Squirt is rubbish and then I qualified my statement.  If you don't agree, then kindly point out what statements of mine you take issue with and we'll debate them on merit.

All you did was post a bunch of endorsements from people who somehow benefited from endorsing Squirt.

Quoting nicknames, Hall of Fame inductions, race times and the colour of their underpants does not make them tribologists.

If you analyse their statements, you'll see they're a little bit like team Festina answering to do you use drugs: "I've never tested positive."

With respect to your esteemed athletes, they've succumbed to making their name totti for a few bucks.

I know you're trolling but you do so much damage with your trolling that ignoring it is a disservice to my fellow cyclists who may just believe all the hype put out by Squirt. Wax is not a suitable lubricant where pressure pushes the lubricant out of two surfaces under pressure. It cannot flow back because it is a solid. Although it lasts a while, the chain starts running metal to metal after just a short ride. It makes an unholy mess of the drivetrain and.....o for goodness sake, I'm repeating myself.

For those of you with Squirt at home, try this simple test. Put a blob of Squirt and a blob of car oil on a smooth surface like a tile or granite kitchen top. Wait for the Squirt to solidify. Now with a spoon push first the one, then into the other lubricant until you hit rock bottom. See which one flows back and which one doesn't. Now put the two spoons in the dishwasher and see which one comes out clean and which one comes out looking like a candlestick holder in a cathedral 14 days after the pope popped his clogs. Make your choice.

This might be a nice time to remind everyone about the "personal attacks" sticky at the top. Play nice' date=' else this thread gets a lock attached

Not to worry MOD. I only consider attacks personal when they come from someone. A nameless coward hiding behind a nom de plume doesn't scare me. It is very easy to snipe from a cave where you needen't show your face nor qualify your statements.

I assume "personal attacks" includes attacks on proprietary products being called "absolute rubbish" or are you just sucking up to ensure you will get your Q&A link off the ground.

PS......... Pink does not scare me.

Big-H no, you may question any product you wish, but one of the members did a direct attack at Johan regarding his show. Uncalled for. Trust me, I could not give 2 cents about the Q&A thread, BUT at least Johan has offered to put together some information. Have you?

End of story, no personal attacks will be entertained. If you don't like it, complain to Admin or leave.
