Upgrade vs New

I've reached a point in my cycling career where I need new wheels. So it makes sense to get disk compatible ones while I am at it and switch to disks all together.

After phoning around I get the impression that it is better to just get a new bike.

Juicy 5s come in at R2880 a set

Juicy 3's @ R2050

And shock and horror LX R4200 (I mean this is insane IMO). Are these guys doing their job properly and giving me the right stuff I cannot say. The dude assumed I don't know what V brakes are so make your conclusion.....

A new Silverback Phoenix comes in @ R3969, disk brakes and all.

Question here would be....Do you rather buy the above bike and move on a bike  with lower components (yes I am sure they work just fine), order from overseas...wheels, brake sets and so on.... or ask the peeps on the hub what they have stashed somewhere at home? <?: prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" />

And also makes you wonder how a bike price has been compiled. What % of the cost is allowed for brakes/fork/frame/components.....?Confused

That Silverback looks okay but it still has a crappy fork that will cost alot to replace. There is nothing wrong with Juicy 3s. Get that and Mavic's cheap R1900 wheels, Jules knows wich ones.

KCNC brakes are even cheaper but I do not know how good they are.

That is great value from Silverback. Even on CRC the cheapest disk brakes are really insane. Mechanicals start at about R750 and that's just for the callipers.

I paid R1000 for dual-control hydraulic Deores (complete set: disks, callipers etc) but I see they're more expensive now that the rand has weakened a bit.

Everything else is really expensive.

[/quote'] WOT!?? Wow, I paid R2000 for a set of XT disc brakes end last year. Can't believe stuff would have gone up _that_ muchShockedShocked

That said, maybe go for the new bike, and just get them to throw in a girl-specific seat (because no-one is quite the same when it comes to our tender bits)LOL Nothing beats that new bike smellWink

Go dual sus while you can.  Silverback, raleigh and mongoose are on the edge of a price war.  (Zoon this is a big hint to preempt and drop the prices) Mongoose has a dual for under 10k.

I saw yesterday they had wheels on CRC with XT hubs and some cheap @ss rims for R1400 about.

Juicy 5's were R2000 for a complete set.....

I paid R2800 for my XTs (non dual control) at Westdene. Okay it's alot but it's alot of brakes aswell.

Hey Para, I just bought that Silverback's fork for my MTB. No problems so far: It's laterally stiff and the lockout works, which is all i wanted. Don't care how heavy it is. I think BB rode with one for quite a while and he said he had no problems either.

Not really interested in a DS at the moment. Think I'll stick to HT for a few more years.

The quality of riding I do can't really justify the extra 5k that I don't have. The bum is used to it by now Wink

I wouldn't go with the Phoenix (glad to see they've changed to hydraulic discs on the 09 model). The fork is a no go (Upgrading a fork is costly around R2.5-3K at least). At least get a bike with Rockshox Dart 2 (Silverback Dakota). The Phoenix also is very heavy for a HT. I would look at the Nabraska or Raleigh RM5, the RM5 has the better shock, but the Nabraska has a better rear derailleur. Phone around there are good deals on these bikes out there. However the best I've seen is around R7700 for the RM5.

On the topic of DS: I upgraded to DS, but if I could shop over I would rather opt for a HT, would have got more value for money.

Upgrade vs New - Upgrade works out more costly in the long run, go new.

HT's are obsolete if you ask me. (Oh wait you didn't...oops!) Rode an HT once and realised how terribly crShockedp they are, the poor dudes on those things really do have a bit of a disadvantage, especially over stuff like fast lumpy grass.....but yeah, I concede that you need one of the 30k plus jobbies or you wind up with 'boing boing' suspension.

Peace out!
