Ok I need to ask a question:

Why do you buy a bike like this? Alot of people I have been talking to lately are into this single speed thing or whatever you call it and say its alot of fun to ride in and around the city etc.

What is th attraction to it??

I second you colonel....still can't see the attraction in single speed.

I like my SS for these reasons:

- No gear problems: you never get chainsuck, your chain never hits the chainstay, you never miss a gear, etc etc.

- The bike is bullet proof. Maintenance is a breeze. This is important for MTB or in climates with wet weather.

- Maintenance is also dirt cheap. I bought a new chain for my SS. Cost me all of R25. And that was the marked price - didn't have the nerve to ask for discount smiley4.gif

- It looks cool

- Will be a nice heirloom one day, unlike the average Raleigh.

Colonel you took the words RIGHT out of my mouth. What is the deal with a singlespeed? The only single speed I had was my first bike ever, a Raleigh Bomber. Put it to you this way, that thing was such a heap of shShockedt that I cannot look at any Raliegh with anything but contempt (so I guess that was it's one and only saving grace LOL).

It was blue. And it had these kiff bomb graphics on the top tube.

Cool bike. Although for me, just like the wheel, gears and shocks were discovered to stay... Had my first and last single speed rigid when I was 8 years old... LOL

I'll leave the joy and fun of a single speed rigid to the other people, how generous of me... hehe

Couldn't have been that bad if you're still riding - how many years later?

Perhaps you should try ride one and all the memories will come flooding back smiley4.gif

I think the appeal is in the simplicity. It's not for hardcore riding, just goofing about on. A trip over to a mate's house. An easy ride on the spruit. That sort of thing.

No doubt that's part of the appeal. As SARA said once....you think you never think about your gears' date=' but you do. You only realize that once you ride one.

This I don't agree with AT ALL. I look forward to having a SS that's the correct size and I see no reason why it can't be used on longer distance events like Knysna or K2C.

It really is more fun than my 5inch travel trail bike.

It's just a completely different dynamic. It's much more challenging, not just in terms of muscling it uphill, but things like maintaining momentum up and downhill over obstacles and such.

Love the saying I read on a website this week regarding single speeding....."always the wrong gear"

I'm completely hooked!

The only SS I'd ever consider is on a jump bike or a BMX.

I always view SS (and even more so rigid SS) and even more so (29er rigid SS) riders in the same light a camry drivers.  It is ultimate in its arb-ness.

I think it's highly likely a completely misplaced and unfounded preception, but it is my perception.  Just riding along doing nothing doesn't do it for me.  I don't think it looks cool.  Quite frankly, it just looks goofy and not in a good way.

Having said that, if you like it, and like riding it, that's ALL that is important.  So enjoy it in spite of me.  Thumbs%20Up

Funny how appropriate some people's hub names are

Remember....don't knock it till you've tried it
