While fitness and training methods certainly plays the biggest role in cramping, your regular diet also certainly plays a role.

If you dont get in your daily share of the right vitamins and minarals that would also contribute to cramping, especially during the hot summer months when you are more prone to dehydration.

If you want to try a affordable suppliment, I can highly recommend ENDUREN Sports salts. It retails for only R75, for 300 tablets and you only use three at a time, before, during or after rides. (It contains Magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium and Iron phosphate).

I have a number of VERY satisfied customers that have had problems with cramping. Since using this product, they have resolved the problem.

Regards

Francois

I have cramped all of my life and have taken advice from many medical sources. I remember speeding down the N1 after the 99'er because I couldn't get my "seized" leg off the accelarator. Like Sara I have nightly "attacks". I've been in my wife's bad books occassionaly for literally booting her out of bed Angry. Well almost.

The bottom line is

a) No-one really understands all the causes for cramping. In different people the causes are different - lack of certain minerals, de-hydration, fatigue etc. etc.

b) Increased fitness levels does not neccesarilly reduce the regularity of cramps in certain individuals

c) It is not proven that the supplements have ANY effect on reducing cramping.

I perspire heavilly just thinking about excersize and it is very salty so I guess that my cramping is associated with dehydration and loss of minerals. My "solution" is a dose of coarse sea salt prior to the hard rides and lots of fluid (and more training). The slo-mag, cramp block, cramp stop, blah blah never did a thing!

More regular, hard and intense training on the bike and you won't cramp easily. Your body adapts to what you throw at it over time and become more efficient at utilizing what you put into it.

Last time I cramped was at the Jock and that was because my friend got lost on his bike and i ended up without water/food at the 90km mark and started dehydrating/camping. I hanged on for 60km and juuuuuust made it.. cramps and all in the scorching mpumalanga sun AHEHheHA!

I would suggest more intense training on the bike and more endurance rides.

WW, the fact that you took salt and nothing happened shows it's unlikely to be mineral loss, but yes, there are those who are natural-born crampers and the reasons are poorly understood.

Still, if you;re loosing tons of salt, replacing some won;t do any harm, and will help your fluid retention to restore normal hydration status afterwards.

Although cramping usually diminishes with increased fitness, if you don;t pace yourself sufficiently and ride yourself stukken in every race, chances are you'll keep cramping. The acid test is, do you cramp in easy rides and when not tired, or only when doing high intensity or late iin races when the muscles are strating to feel it? If the latter, then pacing looks to be the culprit.

Another reaosn may be chronic under-recovery, i.e. the total load is just too much, so it may be that you have to reduce your trianing, not increase it. I have seen a pretty high-level vet rider with a million years racing and winning who became a chronic cramper, and with less training just abut instantly performed better and only cramped the next time he did a 4000m gain alpine randonee, finishing in the top 20 nogal..

As a cramper myself (on and of the bike) I started using cramp-stop just for races . It seems to be working but I am sure my eating habits got a lot to do with cramping . At the Karoo to Coast I cramped very badly and just decided to ignore the pain and started spinning . After about 10 minutes my cramps was gone and I could fly again .

Dit is my eerste keer dat ek skryf.

I cramp when I am pushing the limits BUT I have also cramped during warm-ups without any recurrences during the race or training session - figure that one out.

I mostly cramp AFTER a steady state effort. For example I cramp regularly after the Smits climb down the back stretch (high speed, high cadence).

As they say the only constant with cramps is that women cramp less than men.
