When to change the slime in tyres

Hi there guy's. Had a flat this morning (the one morning I didn't ride with an extra tube), and had to push the bike home. I have slime in my rubes, but it didn't work! So two Questions here. How long do this stuff last? And can I squeze out the old slime and put new ones in. Or do I have to buy a new tube. (buying a new tube is not the problem, it's just that the rims only take presta and the current valves can srew out, and our bike shop doesn't have screw out ones.) Thnx

I have been running slime on my bikes for 18 months now. Take the tube out, find the hole, clean it and patch it. Try again, should work.

Latex-based sealant, which can be identified by its milky colour, doesn't last very long - a few months at most. It dries out rapidly and should be topped up as soon as you cannot hear it slosh around inside the wheel when you shake it.

Eventually you'll find so much dried latex inside the tyre that you can feel the bike pulsating forwards and backwards as this slimeball unbalances the tyre.

True slime, the green stuff, seems to last longer. But once again, it is easy to ascertain whether there is enough in there to plug a puncture or not.  I would remove the tubes every month or so and massage them to determine how much stuff is stil inside and if it is still liquid enough.

Can I just top it up, or do I need to replace the tube?

Where slime is concerned - agree (for once? LOL) with JB. The latex stuff like Stan's is crap, in my experience, especially if you bomb it. Turns into a rubber ball. The best product I have found is Oko, but that also needs to be replaced periodically, probably about 2-4 months between applications. Like HR said, depends if it is thorny...mind you, not sure how you get that goop into tubes, I use it with choobless.

With the small valve (schraeder, I think) that can't unscrew I made a small cut in the tube, put the slime in and patched it up again. This is fine but if you have to top up every few months it's not very economical. But I see you get the schraeder valves that can unscrew. I have to get those.

I agree with intern the OKO is the best unfortunately it comes with a weight penalty so what i do is i mix the two i do about 70ml of stans or joes and about 150ml of OKO it lasts a bit longer because the joes or stans keeps the OKO flowing nicely

and Henri to be honest just do a choobless conversion if you are having trouble with your tubes might seem like alot of PT but it is worth it check out the ghetto choobless conversion thread in tech Q&A
