Energy gels: GU, Whasp, USN

I would change bike shops or the price fixing fearies already got to them. I bought a couple from dischem on Sunday and payed R10.99 ea. But damn the servings are huge. Maybe make them only about 30g.

At the end of the day its all about marketing. You and me both know there is no real differance between you're gels and any other brand on the market. But why does Gu, USN and powerbar sell so many? Gu were the first mass product on the market, everybody knows it. And even though its to thick and sweet for most peoples preference they still use it because they are to scared to try anything new. USN? This fowl tasting crap gets forced down everybody's throats. You can buy it anywere from game to edgars. They are the masters at marketing. And Lance used powerbar so it must be the best. So what makes wasp different? It costs the same and it tastes just as bad as anything else on the market. The pepto gels are a good idea, but how are you going to convince the average cyclists to use it? They dont know about the advantages and they are just so scared that they will die if they use something different. And the ladies specific gels were a good marketing ploy. But how long can it last? Everybody is on that wagon, womens specific insurance, bikes, gels, toilet paper....geez! Are they really that special?! I were involved with the OFM expo, we had plenty people asking us were they can get wasp. You had no representation there so they all bought USN or powerbar. The good thing is that they know about your product, but if its not available how can they buy it? I'm sure its a great product up to standard with the best, but its a new product and it will they time to convince the masses. Good luck!!

After reading this thread I thought I should buy Whasp to support a fellow hubber. Tried the Kiwi Whasp on a training ride on Sunday, the gel worked well, but it really tastes bad. There is no way I could take it during a race. I will try the other flavours and see how it goes.

Just came back from dischem Centurion bought the last 4 Green kiwi couldn't find the new vanilla anywhere.

 

We would like to support a fellow hubber but you have to get the stock out there.

After seeing this thread I went looking for Whasp at my LBS, got waved over to a dusty box of Ladies Whasp on a far shelf. Eventually settled for a couple GU with a bit of trepidation as I cramped badly last time I used them.

 

Lo and behold at the Mazda 40k 1/2 Marathon in Howick on Sunday a nice lady came around handing out Whasp's. 

 

I used mine 2/3 of the way in and it worked for me.

No idea what flavour it was as I was too wet, tired and muddy to care when I took it.  

 

I'll buy them in future, assuming I can find them somewhere.

Thanks guys, the more you ask your LBS and dischems etc for the stock the easier it becomes for us, we are doing all the work on our side...

Good day, I would just like to add my 2 c worth as well: I use Energy Dynamics because they are not that sweet, and I like the texture of the gel in my mouth. The reason why I use it: My LBS recommended it. I used an energy bar before. Do not underestimate the power of the LBS! Next to my Dominee, I trust my LBS the most  Maybe you can join local group rides and give the product to the riders for free to try before they start the training ride and ask them for feedback at the end. I will see you at the 94.7 stand and will buy WHASP and try it on my next training ride...

Thanks for the support Fastone and i dont underestimate the LBS at all...just would like them to believe in the product a bit more and i keep trying to get them to support and believe in it and if more people tell them how great it is they will maybe start to take a different attitude towards it

I went to buy Whasp green Mamba'a at Dischem Greenstone. There were very few left and 1 or 2 had burst in the box so the rest did not look good. I also noted their are no full boxes on sale like with energy bars. Who does your merchandising for you cause you need to chat to them.

I managed to get 4 green mamba's all be it that they were covered in gel and used them on the bakwena -"AWSOME STUFF GO GET IT MATE"

Hi,finally found some at the dischem in Kollonade Centre in PTA,at my local one in Olympus i could allways only find the ladies one.Tried the stuff at the Crater Cruise and found it's taste horrible but it worked like a bomb.

Only tried the green one as this was all I could find,will definetely use it again but driving 40 km to find it is not worth the effort.How does the rest taste or are all pretty much the same???I think the popularity of the others are due to them being available"Never had any problems finding GU".Then also the taste of Whasp.

Tried Kiwi on Sunday's training ride...

Holy crap, talk about the Lance power boost effect. I took off.

However, it does taste pretty damn awful. not sure i'd call that kiwi. not quite sure what i'd call it actually.
