Hey

I am looking for a new MTB, but donn't have the cash now as I'm looking at a road bike first.

Anyway - the Q is: What do you guys think of SRAM X0? Heard/ not confirmed by anyone that SRAM needs a lot more attention on MTB and road.

The other option the the all known Shimano XT(great value for $).

I'm looking at the new 09 Raleigh X0 bike (but still don't know the prices for the 09 models), nothing on www.raleigh.co.za ...

The other bike I like is the 08 GT Zaskar Pro - they were new at 25K, think it would be cheaper now... maby.

I just don't see the need for XTR - looks perhaps but that it for me.

ANYONE have ridden the Sram groupsets on MTB?

Got X0 on my Scalpel and X9 on my Trek. Wouldn't go back to Shimano if I got it for free.

Can't go wrong with SRAM.

Don't take cheap shots at manufacuters unless you qualify your statements. What is wrong with the Shimano products you have?

For MTB'ing, I prefer my SRAM. End of story.

...and please don't go off on an over-technical, self-righteous rant because you believe you know more than everyone else. Thanks.

I run a mixture of SRAM (shifters and deraileurs) and XT (brakes, cranks etc) on my Blur. Only problem encountered with the Shimano XT cranks has been the retaining bolts coming loose and then sheering the plastic cup (sp?) off. Seen this happen to another XT crank at Karoo to Coast. XT hydraulic brakes are fantastic value though!

Hahahahahaha

I prefer sram, I had shimano, sold it and got X9/X0 now, had xt/xtr.

The sram is much smoother, doesnt take as much maintaining as shimano, gear shifts are smooth as silk, found shimano a little clunky.

Sorry JB but shimano is crap compared to sram.

And ASTANA, Sram X0 is comparale to XTR by the way.

SRAM all the way

Was not comparing stuff just said I'm looking at XT or X0 as the bikes i'm looking at have these components...

Thanx anyway

I think you are looking at this from the wrong angle. I would never buy a bike based on what groupset it has on. I buy a bike base on the following: Frame, Fork, Wheels, and then only look at groupset.

BTW: I ride a 08 Zaskar Expert which only has LX but is a awesome ride thanks to its great great frame and RS Reba fork. I hardly notice I only have LX components and as they wearout I can easily upgrade.

There is a difference between stating a preference and an outright pan of a manufacturer and its products. The OP asked for advice and you slated Shimano. It would help if you could point out why you don't like those products. Don't they work? Do they skip gears? Do they rust at the first sign of rain? Do they break cables? Is the technology clunky? What?

Be specific.

I trust you didn't find this post too technical and you understand my request.

having ridden shimano rapidfire/rapid-rise most of cycling career, i thought i would never get used to the double-thumb shifting of the sram stuff. but got into it within five minutes of getting on a x0-equipped demo bike. worked fine.

personally, i stick with deore or lx stuff, just because of replacement cost involved.

Sram/Shimano? They are both excellent groupsets. At the end of the day its how you set them up and look after them that will make a difference.

As for the range, price vs weight would be the main difference up the range.

I have ridden Sram x9 and Shimano XT and I can tell you that there is not much between the 2. As for slating one or the other that's all just childish BS. If you dont like the one or the other you never will and will find any reason to knock it down.

I'm running XO gripshift on my MTB. The gripshift is the primary reason I prefer XO, the reduced sensitivity to cable mis-adjustment is the other. (Shimano cable pull is less than SRAM to change a gear, hence it is slightly more sensitive to mis-adjustment).

I've got XTR cranks though, they're simply the strongest/best-value crank out there. I wouldn't trust carbon with the number of stupid rock impacts I make.

On my old MTB I've got 4-yr old XT with thumbshifters. Don't have too many complaints there, although like I said I do prefer the gripshift.

The simple answer is that there's very few bad components out there, and most choices come down to budget and personal preferences.

I couold not get use to the double thumb shifting of Sram and that is why I'm sticking to Shimano. My new XT with shadow derailleur is amazing. I'm runnin git with XTR cables and have not had a single problem yet. Personal choice.
