What is the limit of caffeine/kg body weight.

I did a ride on Sunday with a caffeine sports drink in my camelpack and a couple of gels containing caffeine and i felt particularly shaky after.

Caffeine is a mild central nervous stimulant that occurs naturally in

coffee beans, cocoa beans and tea leaves. In large doses, it can be

profoundly toxic, resulting in arrhythmia, tachycardia, vomiting,

convulsions, coma and death. The average cup of coffee or tea in the

United States is reported to contain between 40 and 150 mg caffeine

although specialty coffees may contain much higher doses.

Over-the-counter supplements that are used to combat fatigue typically

contain 100-200 mg caffeine per tablet and doses of 32-200mg are

included in a variety of prescription drug mixtures. Fatal caffeine

overdoses in adults are relatively rare and require the ingestion of a

large quantity of the drug, typically in excess of 5 g. Over a period

of approximately 12 months our office reported two cases of fatal

caffeine intoxication. In the first case, the femoral blood of a

39-year-old female with a history of intravenous drug use contained 192

mg/L caffeine. In the second case, femoral blood from a 29-year-old

male with a history of obesity and diabetes contained 567 mg/L

caffeine. In both cases, the cause of death was ruled as caffeine

intoxication and the manner of death was accidental.

So you are saying that espressos alone will not kill me.  I need to either take lots of diet mix, or intravenous caffieine.

Well that is some very good news indeed.Big%20smile

Adults can safely consume up to 500mg a day without getting adverse effects. Still that amount is not nearly enough to cause caffeine intoxication. While studying I could easy ingest 500mg of caffeine in a matter of a few hours. 3 x regmakers + a redbull = 530mg of caffeine. The same as 3-4 cups of coffee.

Is it also not different from person to person?  One of my cycling buddies can happily swallow caffeine loaded gels from start to finish of the ride.  I usually only dare to use one in the last hour because I get the serious rattles from just one.

spent a day in ER once with caffeine poisoning

the doc took one look into my eyes and kept on asking me what drugs I took & I could not convince him that I was not taking anything LOL

a couple of glucose drips later I was doing just fine.

it took them a couple of days of blood testing to figure out that I actually had caffeine poisoning.

you cant get it from a one day binge - it builds up in your system over days  / weeks before it hits you.  if you drink enough water to flush the kidneys you should be just fine.

people people people....

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH COFFEE OR TOO MANY BIKES!!!!

if anyone tries to convince you otherwise they need serious help Wink

I agree SP

If that was true then I should have been dead a long time ago.

I drink up to 4 liters of coke a day in the summer and in winter when it's cold 8-10 cups of coffee a dayLOL

Even the story that too much coke and coffee causes kidney stones.....hell, I should have had rocks passing through my system by nowOuch

how much were u drinking that you had to go on a glucose drip?

i think that they put you on glucose drip to help flush your system irrespective of what you have taken.

also think it helps with dehydration...
