With a 22 on the back Slave should easily be able to manage a cadence of 20rpm. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Better pack a tent and cooking utensils and warm clothing for the night it could be a long ride.

Eddie Grant ? Tell me do you feel my love? Do you feel it as I walk ride away??

Slave went up the 1st hill conventionally to start with but then started to slalom back and forth like a skier' date=' except goin' uphill; tryin' to take out some of the gradient whilst pumping that 22/42 combination.

?Aint gonna stop till I get to the top.? (was that KC and the sunshine band?)

& then the big one - the monster hill towards the end 10%+ & goes on for miles.  Our gear-grinding chum got to the top in 2nd place - it was a Slavetastic performance' date=' everyone agreed. [/quote']

?Love hurts? "Cycling Hurts? Nazareth.

Dudes this is why we need core strength. I was rudely reminded of this fact up that incline. I needed to stop for a lower back recovery, The legs and lungs still felt fine at this point. My one and only stop for a rest.

Thanks JL, I?ll take a bow on this one. Awesome climb that. Definitely the longest, steepest climb I have ever done. Despite the pain (more in the back than anywhere else, I loved that feeling of ?I?ve done it?.

Give this guy a proper cassette and take away his fags & you have a genuine contender.

Kind words my friend. Thank you for the encouragement. Leave the cassette. The fags are on their way out.

We were too polite to start a poll on the fluorescent green no. he showed up wearing that his Mrs had made him - but it seemed to keep the animals away and' date='being visible from space, there was no chance of him getting lost in it.

So, very good all round today - wish every day could be this way.

Mrs. Slave would hurt ya if you ragged her jacket. smiley19.gif

I second the sentiment about riding being cool and sometimes very special. It was very special riding in the SBR and the coincidence of the whole thing, it was my 200th ride.

Yeah, I have been on a bike far more than that, but it was my 200th measured ride. An awesome location for a landmark ride and I sure won't wait 199 or even 99 more to go ride there again.

All in all it was a special ride with some guys who are becoming good friends. It was a great ride, great location, and some good dues making it all round damn fine. Some of our buds were MIA. We expect to see you at the next one.

Go Slave you beauty!!

Well done bud' date=' hearing some great things here 'bout the prep for Fountains. [/quote']

Thanks coach. Couldna done it without you and Gov2.0. Another satisfied customer hey?

Keep it up' date=' as the days get colder, the going gets tough, and the tough............

[/quote']

Hide away in warmer places. I?m inclined to agree wth an old bird who said yesterday the "lingerie option" certainly would have been warmer and was a much more attractive option for cold Sunday mornings.

I say get rid of the 22' date=' and get a 39 in front, marked diff, ride with the 22/42 when you know the rides are flat!

[/quote']

What, are you crazy? Dude. I love my gearing. Ok, was very tough up some of those hills and a bit of core training and I?ll be able to do it sitting down.(Ok, it was tough up all of them. Some core stuff and it?ll be good to go.)

Also needed to do some power trining because all this cadence has made me weak and lazy.smiley9.gif

The N3 entrance.

My frist abortive attempt we entered at the western or Kareekloof entrance. Mrs. Slave was along in the car and we rode at mid-day during the December heat wave. It was too hot and too windy and the fact that there was a recovery vehcile close by made it too easy a choice to bail.

Oh ok. I think the times I have ridden it in races we entered at the Kareekloof entrance. How far did you ride? I read there are about 60km of tarred roads in SBRNR.

Route was about 57 k's. The routes used for the races were much shorter but did include the worst of the climbs. That one bites you after two other hectic climbs when you do the whole loop.

I will do it again though. I understand it is good currency in the bank despite a very low average speed. I only managed 19.2 over the distance but not sure how accurate that was beacuse the timing was interputed.

I stopped the clock for two k's by accidentally puching the start/stop switch. (Dumbass that I am.)

Andyr249...there is a lot more to the reserve than what gets ridden in the race that goes through there! Fair enough, you do go up the longest climb, but from the N3 entrance the climb back up to the top of the same climb from the other side is a killer. I also find the climb just after the picnic area along the Heidelberg road hard. Dunno why, but that one always hurts me.

I'm just a little hesitant to do the reserve in the winter, coz you work up such a sweat going up the hills, then freeze on the way down...last few times I attempted it in the winter I have ended up sick.

But make no mistake, there is nowhere better or more challenging to train IMHO...

I agree that hill seems to bite back although it is one of those hills that seems to get easier every time you do it.

Slave, I am intrigued with your gear ratios, please confirm what ratios you were riding with front and back?

IanJ, I know Slave does ride a 42tooth front ring, and more than likely a 22 at the rear...but cannot confirm that much.

That hill I mentioned is hard...but, like you say it does get easier with each attempt!

Did a few consecutive laps there a few months back...cant say it gets easier with each lap of the same day though!

So Slave's small ring is 42? That is a tough ratio for SBR.

Yup doing 2 laps there you need to pace yourself on the first lap to make sure you survive the second. I once did 2 laps and then rode back to Panorama up the steps, was quite stuffed by the end.

so out of interest's sake... what is a good gear ratio for those hills? I've only ever done SBR on my MTB. I'm a bit scared to ride my road bike there because of the gearing!
