Hey Hummy!

Sorry dude...we all have events where we dont feel we went as well as we should have. School fee's dude.

Yes, we are at the end of the long passage...just past the doctors rooms. We are the office that still has no door locks! But if you keep popping in this week, you might be drafted into helping me carry stuff!!

how was the Tri?

Thanks for asking Trubie.

It was the worst race I've ever had. Felt absolutely awful after the race and that heat broke me.

A Short Race Report

Got there an hour early as usual' date=' spent a good 20 minutes driving around looking for parking. Found a spot to put my bike with an old lady, kid and myself wandered around for a short while. Got back to the bike, then asked race refs when and where can i rack? "We running late, you guys will rack over there, just be patient." Hung around they started the Sprint and mini events 20 and 30 minutes late respectively. Thought OK suppose to start at 10:45 + 20 min = 11:10 Give or take just in case.

Come 10:45, nothing, come 11:10, still hanging around bike not even racked. At about 11:20 bike rack open, found an awesome spot. 11:35 disappeared to the water as race briefing was about to begin @ 11:45. Bla, bla, bla, got dropped in the water swam by myself, as i got out the water i knew it was going to be a very hot and long race. On the bike, was excited for as knew i had prepared enough. Only to forget the cleat covers on the bottoms of my shoes. [img']https://assets.bikehub.co.za/legacy_images/smilies/smiley5.gif[/img] Eventually figured out what was happening, resolved it and moved on. Awesome cycle entirely by myself. Got back dying of heat, drenched myself in icy water, put those running shoes on for a strenuous run. At 12:45 all the marshals and police had decided to go home or chill on the pavement. First lap was watching out for cars driving over cones, 2nd lap maneuvering between cars to keep racing. With no water points besides the "make shift" one at the lap point, it was dry, hot and exhausting.

Finished my Race with a 1:23:48 official. 10th in 16-17 Category and 20th male.

@ GOV3. Went past Aspen today said office 4 still not open???????

You any where near the doctors rooms?

Eish, that sounds like it was absolute chaos Humming Bird... Ah well, write it down as experience (it sux yeah!) and move on.

Ok...so I'm gonna have a little moaning session here...

This morning on our 'long route' ride we had an unfortunate incident where a guy crashed and was rather badly injured. From the brief exam we did on the side of the road it looked that he had sustained a broken collarbone as well as lots of road rash. Now' date=' when he crashed he did bring 2 other guys down with him, but both were fine and managed to get up and ride on....but when he crashed we were a bunch of approx 30guys?

Minutes later there were 4 of us left with the guy?

Guys, I know we all enjoy our morning rides, but when one of our fellow bikeys goes down lets make sure he gets all the assistance he needs. The whole, and I quote "I'm not an ambulance" mentality is quite scary.

We all meet up to ride together to be safe, but wont hang around to assist when someone needs help?

I'm a bit shocked to be honest.

Yesterday on the Alewynspoort road at the tail end of the bunch a guy went down after losing a tussle with a car. Look, I admit I was nowhere near the accident when it happened but from what I understand a couple people stopped to help him. Thats shocking.

Last week, on our long ride going into Henley an experienced rider fell on the gravel in the corner. The whole bunch (experienced riders) stopped en masse to ensure the guy was ok. Lets take a page out of this book. You never know when your gonna be the guy face down in the dirt and hoping someones going to stop and help.

I have one last thing to say...if you are nervous in a bunch, just dont try and mix it with a group...especially when they start going faster. Its a recipe for disaster...

oh, and when we meet up at Xumbugs dont be a dunce and just stand in the middle of the frigging slip lane. I had to tell people this morning that they were in the way, whats up with common sense?

Please guys, lets think about the safety of of us all...
[/quote']

Agree with version 3! The mentality of some of the guys on Saturday was quite disturbing up at the front of the bunch.

Went short yesterday so found out what happened with the guy who had a tussle with the car. Guy was riding 3rd wheel from the back. Approaching the stop street so the group was quite stretched out and he was riding single file at the time. A bakkie coming from behind us tried to over take the group around a bend as a polo was approaching from the other side. Needless to say, bakkie driver was in the wrong so swung back into the lane taking out the guys rear wheel and spinning his bike. Momentum playing against the poor guy sends him into the pillar of the polo by the driver door/windscreen and back into the group taking 2 others down with him.

Did the group stop? NO! Comment passed was "This is a training ride. We're here to train not stop for every guy who falls or has a puncture..."

Hey Hummy,

Sorry to hear bud but this is how it is. I found the same issues 2 years ago onthe same event where 4x4 were riding over cones and joining 9- 12 year ols kids in their race.

They actually had to stop the kids race as the cars would not budge.

I since have not done this event again.

I do most of my IM training from 10am to 3pm on the weekend to try and condition myself for the heat just a thought.

Main reason for not being in the ride on weekends at the moment.

Kieran, I must be honest when I say that some cyclist have the mentality of a bafoon.

If this is what we as fellow cyclist feels for each other how can we begin to expect any better from motorists.

I ALWAYS ride fully prepared and with cell as I never rely on fellow cyclist (current comp excluded) or cars for that matter.

Must say that it still seems to be better with MTB as in most races you would NEVER leave a Lady or other cyclist next to the road.

I did Emperors this weekend and would have to name and shame half the bunch for litering and got to a point where I could just not remember all the numbers anymore?????

Sad but true

Hummy, no doubt you will have gain valuable experience from the race. Try and think on where you can improve and prepare for better. Maybe as Predictor said, do some training in the heat to condition yourself.

Predictor, how was your Emperors?

Leggs not present and looking for the end from 60km.

2:52 BUT what I learned was not to leave the entry to the last day and thus one should get better seeding smiley36.gif

Entered for R4S and Carnival City so lets hope I get better seeding.

I spoke to Trubie and understand you both had a good ride.smiley32.gif

I am in a bit of a hole at the moment and trying to train my way out.

10 weeks and 5 days with at least 2 weeks taper = 8 weeks of training smiley23.gif

BUT I will be ready my RHR dropped below 50 for the first time since atta so some hope at last.

Amazing how long it took me to recover from that 11 hour effort.

Hbird  - bad luck sonny. Take what you can from the race, learn from it and forget about it asap. Its experience more than anyhting else, which will come in handy later in yout career.

10th is great despite what you may think. You still young to the sport and can go far. Keep up the training and kick butt next time.

Andy was the agressor and got another top 20 finish (second week in a row I might add), I just hung on at the back of the 60 strong pack. The A winning time was 2:37:39 - way slower than last year (2:23), and I did a 2:37:53 (2:41:04 last year) - Andy was sandwiched somewhere inbetween. The race was 6k's longer this year

Now I have proof!!!

Predictor, that is still a very respectable time!

I just wanted to finish near the front of the group. I didn't contest the sprint but was happy to finish in the bunch. My goal for this race was a time goal and not a position goal and I wanted to finish with the first main group of the A bunch but stay out of trouble. The race was not a race that is really suit to me like Berge en Dale was. This one is way too flat. I achieve what I wanted for the race and a top 20 was a bonus.

Might come past there tomorrow GO after swimming is done at school. If you need help let me know, I'll gladly help out.

Kid there are one or TWO people on this thread that are slightly in denial about how strong they really are!!! You two should now and again take the spot light you deserve it!!!!!

Thanks Hummy!

Is it just me or has there been a loss of interest in this thread? The Hub seems really 'dull' lately. Me thinks it needs a sex scandal, or a 'Lance' debate again!

How's the showdown between Indigo Kid and Mandy shaping up? Is it going to happen? Will there be drug testing?

When is Slave expected back on the bike?

How is IM prep going for Predictor?

Hummy, joining me for some serious TT training?

Tachy, you've been low key dude...all ok?

Trubie...that gap was a lot closer than I thought! Sweet! Your coming good...just in time to wear your scuba gear for winter again!

Agteros...you've become mighty chirpy on all threads!

My news...

Well, my wonderfull landlords are capable of screwing anything up! 6weeks past inception date and I'm still waiting for power points, locks and a decent wall job.

And I'm off to Taipei next month for the bike show. Should be cool, and hopefully I'll bring some wicked cool new stuff back! (heated handlebar tape Trubie?)

Got some big things planned, but sometimes I wonder if my enthusiasm is a little too grand. I'll be having some winter criteriums from Aspen to keep us fit and excited through winter.

Maybe some small road race's as well if I can get permission. But, if you have any ideas you'd like to share I'd be happy to try and put them on.

As for me training wise, its all go go go for worlds a little later this year. Bit daunting, but nice to have something to focus on. Got plenty miles in my legs over Xmas, so I hope they'll pay off on the track later in the year.

OK...I'm off, have a date with the PVR and last nights episode of HOUSE!
