...to get sick after a hard event?

Got back from the Desert Dash last week, felt run down, got lots of sleep, yesterday...whammo, flu! In the middle of summer as well...Dead

Anyone else experience this after something like Ironman, Epic, Sabie etc?

Fatty, it does happen.

Can't give you a technical explanation but you use so much of your reserves in a long endurance event that your immune system becomes susceptible to any virus immediately thereafter.

Its happened to me so often that I now dose myself with vitamins after a hardcore event.

Also.. you can go hectic on the vitamin c - vital vit c tabs from clicks/discem. eat them like sweets - sour but works. ginger and lemon also works. it is likely not flu just your body flushing stuff out - or, you could have trashed your system and picked up a bug but likely flushing junk out

Yeah sinuses etc blocked as per usualy sinus flu I tend to pick up in winter. Guess I can rest a bit more than usual this x-mas season and just chill out LOL Taking the usual vit-c and Advil-CS tabs etc.. I was more curious to see if others also get sick after hard events..

What Di says is true, you cannot overdose on Vitamin C. What your body does not need you will wee out. Be carefull though if you have a history of high uric acid. Overdosing will cause pain if you are prone to arthritis. You will then have to overdose on iboprufen type medicine..... which cause s other problems........

Yeah, after a nasty event like this you do have to manage your health and risks to it pretty tightly, otherwise you pick up all sorts of daft little nagging infections.

Definatly happens, what I've found that helps a lots is to increase your intake of vitamen C for a few weeks before the event by taking some Vit C booster or ascorbic acid tab once a day in addition to a good mulitvitamen program, having a Vitamen B shot a day or two before a tough events helps a lot, and if it a multistage event drinking some redydrate mix (sachet with 500ml water) each evening to top up your electolytes.

Yes its pretty common and a pain in the butt, can also happen just before events after exhastive training.

The immune system (white blood cells) takes a bit of a knock during exhaustive type exercise, this effect apparently begins a few hours after ending the exercise and can last a day or so. During this time period you need to assist the immune system by replacing carbs (glucose and also Zinc) and being sensible (avoid sick people, don?t touch public surfaces, wash hands and face often?)
