I have also had nothing but problems with FPC ' date='they are expensive, very dishonest, have children working in their shops that have no knowledge of the products they sell ,and dont ever expect them to phone back.

[/quote']

First week of December I took my mtb bike in to FPC, Fourways, to have my front shock checked. Was told to fetch my bike a day later, got there and bike was not checked, story gets longer when the supplier of the dust cover of the shock is blamed for the bad client service I received from FPC. Eventually, after 2 weeks, dust cover traced to the shop, me travelling to the shop all the way from Alberton. The manager did not even come to me to say sorry. In the mean time, I have found out I work in the same company as the financial backers of FPC. They will be informed of the poor service. Too many kids in the shop without proper experience!!!

Go for it!! I keep wondering how those guys stay in business!

I fully agree with doing your own research before venturing off to shop. Some places have knowledgable people in the shop, however there are plenty places filling their sales team with cheap labour. This therefore requires some homework on your part to ensure you can identify the knowledge level of the sales assistant.

The reason I will pay normal LBS prices is because I expect a level of expertise/competance both in the front office (sales) and back offlice (workshop). Should I find that I don't get the expect quality I will find another shop to frequent.

Front shock - Fox F100 RL

What is more is that the shock is on 16 months old! smiley19.gif

Thanks for the info, I have been planning to upgrade to a Fox, this however I think has settled it (other factor, a previous post with many Fox riders saying the oil leak comes standard on the Foxes - sounds like a Land rover Defender statement), RockShox SID it will be.

R3100 is a hefty bill to be saddled with, did they replace 1/3 of the Fork during the service?

Because i could not find the part i was looking for,I decided to phone before i go there.

FPC Irene confirmed that they have what i was looking for in stok and even gave me a price.

So after work i race to get there before they close, only to get told that they havent had that part in stock a couple of months now and that they dont know when they are going to get in again.

Then the little sh*t tells me that i phoned the wrong store and should basically go be irritaded someware else.

WAT IS FOUT HIERMEE?????? Mag net haarlose maergatte fietsry??????

Oom, ek sal na jou raad luister want jy het ten minste die tan! Al is dit net deur die helmet. Ek verstaan ook dat daar 'n tekort aan skeermesse in Angola is.

Miskien is ek bevooroordeeld.

...... en eendag as jy nou mooi groot is sal jy dalk net ook so baard gegroei kry!!!!!!

Since we are telling FPC fishing stories, listen here. My fish is bigger than yours.

In early December one of my wheel customers and a fellow Hubber went to FPC in Paulshof to pick up his MTBN after a "full" service.

The bike was on his back seat, wheels in the boot and standing upside down on the seat.

I could clearly see a nice work of luminous green grease squirted onto the bottom headset collar - right a round.  Apparantly the mackie there thinks you can lubricate an internal headset by squirting some grease onto the collar where it does nothing but catch little bits of gravel shot up by the wheel.

I then did the customary wheelspin - holding the wheel by the axle and spinning it, feeling bearing condition. There were bricks in those bearings. Dry as hell and full of grit.

Apparently a FPC "Full" service doesn't require the mackie to open any bearings.

Beat that.

R1000-R2000 for a bike service..... nothing just got a call from my "friendly" LBS to say that my shock is ready from its service.

"How much will it be?"

R3,100 -

Glad to see they're not tied down by price-fixingLOL

My little Park Tools Blue Book has saved me a lot of money. I do all the small stuff myself, but the bigger stuff that needs specialised tools I take to Clint Curtis at Finish Whine Cycles.

I have a good relationship with them, coz I buy just about everything from there and his coffee machine is fixed!

One more thing, when I get a bike back I do a simple nut and bolt check just to make sure everything is tight (and there!).

Remember mechanics are humans too!!

Yes what is with this green grease practice, I recently saw a bike freshly serviced by Westrand Cycles. The outside of the internal BB around the crank had been nicely greased with this light greenish grease, the same on the axles of each hub. This same service called for chain and cassette replacement. We needed to replace a broken spoke and to get the spoke out we had to remove the cassette, oddly we had no need to use the required tools because the lock nut was lose enough to do by hand. What a quality service!

As for the grease I think it is to make the unknowing customer think: "Ah there is grease oozing out, they must have removed it and lubed it!"

My two cents worth.

Recently built up a nice little bike at a cost of just under 60k, after a LOT of shopping around and product investigation. In the course of this I have been to pretty much most of the mainstream LBS in the Jhb North area....certainy all of the mainstream ones.

Let's just say that I seemed to know a heck of a lot more than a most of the gentlemen that attempted (badly) to answer my questions. OK, sure I am flat out detail centric but if you cannot bother to actually get to know at least a resonable amount about whatever it is that you do, then PLEASE, do the world a favor and change jobs?

Anyway, long story short....Mike's Bikes in Greenside is the spot people; on the ball, wsupremely jacked and deliver EXCELLENT service (in my experience). You get what you pay for.....
