is there a way for me to convert my mtb to single speed only for a week and then convert it back??

I'm doing a cycle tour in April with some guys of the hostel I used to live in, and want to do the tour (Potch - Durban) single speed..

what would be the easiest and cheapest way to do this??

thanks!

remove your levers. then you cant change gear.

or put a clip on each end of the cable on your front and rear derailler so it cant move either way

See how far you can get by limiting your front and rear deraileurs with th L & H limit screw. I am sure you will be able to limit the front to the middle ring and the back to very few options.

As a afterthougt. You can alsoplay with your cable tension. I O W. you put your shifter in the most relaxed position, pull your deraileur to the gear you want and tighten the cable. Then limit the other way with the limit screw (H). the best way will depend on your deraileur type (Top normal or bottom normal) and what gear you choose at the back. (Middle, higher end or lower end)

Rearrange your casette so that there are two spacers either side of your chosen cog. Put your chosen cog in the middle of the casette and the other sprockets on either side. Then turn your limit screws to the maximum so that you can't access those gears.

Or you could also ask your LBS for spare spaces and just put a single cog on your freewheel body and make up the rest of the space with spacers either side?
