He does indeed.

 

Harald has probaly spent more time racing than most of us, he was a top triathlete and was a excelent swimmer and cyclist (and his running was not to shabby either). Stand to be corrected but I believe he may have been SA Champ a few times and represented SA at WC's.

So, "THEY" say that a way to measure your approximate Max HR is to subtract your age from 220 (BPM). Not entirely scientific but a guide. I rode at Kyalami last night and maxed at 224. at 48 years that is 52 bpm over my supposed max (about the same as my resting HR.) I must confess to worrying a bit that I wouldn't be so good this morning, but here I am.

yes as you said a guide there are many many variables to take into account with max hr and also even with the most expensive hr monitor don't think it doesn't lie or give false readings

Are you saying these might be falce readings?

I have wondered about these for a while, I have never whitnessed my HR going beyond 190 (im 27) but often get maxes of around 220 when I go over the info of my ride on my monitor.

I'm 34, and no matter howhard I try, I can't get my heart rate over 179! What does this imply?

 

Either I have a super efficient cardiovascular system (NOT!)

or I am a wus! (more likely)

 

I would like to know exactly what affects max hr, and how this affects your performance.

'sall personal - if I got my HR to 180+ I'd probably have a heart attack.  Either that, or a foofie valve failure.

My polar estimates my max HR as 172 and I figure that ain't far off...

 

Max I've ever seen I think is 168.

your heart rate monitor can often pick up a rapid pulse or a disturbance when the belt shifts slightly so it will give the random reading of like 220 etc. but some people wont get the random readings...its not to much importance tho so dont stress

I am 28 and the first time I used a HR monitor was doing the Geohegan Race. Now those who know KZN knows the Geohegan circuit is famous for the b%%&ch of a hills it contains. In that race my Max HR was 184 and I have been using that as my MAX HR. But I can confirm that the HR monitor sometimes misreads or malfunctions. I especially find it on cold mornings. I have seen my HR at 225 going downhill just after I got on my bike and that is impossible.

 

We are training now using HR threshold and not MAX HR (Thanks to my coach), which I think is better because it is easier to find your threshold HR than your MAX HR

Comprende... I have thought It could be my vest/top blowing against the strap when going downhill. But like you said, I also use mine as 190  otherwise It means I will be doing 70% of max HR when haulling ass up the blockhouse climb.. hahah
