I?started in the last group for the FastOne ('Notstrong').? So when we arrived at a fairly empty 'secure parking area' I could see that there were certain elements that had no interest in cycling whatsoever.? We meant to write down registration numbers but due to the rush to get everything done we never got to it.? Needless to say when we arrived back there after the race' date=' we were not surprised to see that vechicles were in fact stolen and damaged...

I completely agree with Gillie that security should have been one of the first priorities of the organisers.? This really left a bad smell to an otherwise well organised race.

?

GFishy, with respect, where have you been the last 15 years?? To expect the Police to take care of matters is really naive...

Mate, I'm only stating that the police/government should get their act together. I live abroad and I hear so many things from foreign people about SA I am ashamed to say I am from there...

It is unfortunate that people's cars are stolen at an event. These are soft targets and it won't be the last...

There is crime everywhere you go on the planet. Go check out Sao Paulo for instance. Don't be ashamed ever. South Africans are the coolest people on this planet. Sure, we have some scums who steal, rape, murder and pillage, and it's really sad, but the last thing I'd ever care about is what some foreigner said about my country. I see them all the time in Cape Town, hiking in the hills with Vaude packs and camera bags, reeking of Tommy Hillfiger and looking like sunburned rejected Dolce'&Gabana models. They're the ones who end up being mugged.

How should the government get their act together? How do you stop poor, uneducated people in a developing country from stealing things?

But, I do agree that at an event, it should be up to the organiser to see that people are safe.

Tourism generates a lot of revenue for SA...fact.

Why compare SA to Brazil? Truth is people don't fear the police in SA cause they are just as corrupt. What happened to Selebi...? Still going on?

Yes, crime is everywhere. One should always assess the situation and act upon it.

Organizers should allocate more parking, get security and pay for them with the high entrance fees cyclists are being charged etc. GFishy2009-01-26 10:08:45

While it is unfortunate that there were cars stolen at the event, nobody is saying if the cars were stolen in the designated parking area. We, much like a lot of other cyclists parked at the venue. And on our late return, there weren't more than 20 cars left in the parking area near the pens, were greeted by a security gaurd ( female) that had been at work since 4 in the morning. Also we were asked to turn off the ignition, and restart the car, before we could proceed out of the parking.

So bottom line is were the stolen cars inside or outside the designated parking area?

I'm from the UK and go back now and again. I did some work for a small company where everyone had recently had their cars broken into and stuff  stolen. Not in a big city, but in a small town (Marlborough)...

The problem here is the violence associated with the crime. Like Mathilda having her throat slashed for a cell phone...

I know for a fact that at least the car of the unfortunate hubber was in a parking bay with a security guard - on confrontation the guard said that he went to feed the dogs and when he got back everything was over - dogs must have been really hungry.

It is not only the loss of the car but Id books, licences, bike rack etc that is going to take weeks to months to sort out

I'm with you went to the pro 20 cricket last week and the missus got her handbag stolen with both sets of house and car keys,ID books, drivers licenses, cell phones ect ect.

In hind site it would definitely teach us never to keep everything especially important things like documents and keys in one place ,but it was such an enjoyable night just to be spoiled by the criminal element wandering around the stadium looking to steal.

PS: You know how much it costs for a locksmith to open your doorsAngry

Convenient hey? Angry

Call me cynical - but I treat these 'guards' more like scouts for the thieves.

As a rule I do not tip any of them, and dare they try to 'help' when I reverse out of a parking bay, they better be flight of feet and mind as I act as if they are not behind my car.

They will only get respect if there is some form of accountability from their side with regard to the 'service' they render

this one is for "bustthesickness". Being "poor and uneducated in a developing country" is no justification or excuse for stealing or unwarranted vicious violence.

I will NEVER EVER pay a car guard.  He has no accountability, if your car gets stolen.  They are arrogant rude and most of the times drunk.  And everybody who "tips" them is creating a bigger and bigger problem.  They are like the trolls on the hub, if you ignore them they will go away.

How interesting reading the different views on car guards etc.

Some questions:

How many cars stolen from secure parking areas in shopping malls companies etc , do you get compensated from them - NO

Last year some thieves were caught stealing cars from a well secured underground parking lot with a paypoint at the entrance and it turned out to be off duty guards working on the site. Still no payment from the parking franchise or shopping complex owners as they have the small print on the ticket clearly clearing them from such acts. So where and when do you win with your vehicle parked at a public venue.

NO matter what event is held at NASREC there is always cars stolen, what do you expect of a guard who us faced with a firearm pointed in his/her direction.

The assumption that the cars guard are always in with the thieves are not always correct some try to make it work others simply don't give a damn as they get a R100-00 note slipped to turn a blind eye.

At the Soweto marathon in November a prominant doctor had his car stolen from the parking lot at the police station, what do you make of that.

I think if the organizers plan to use a venue like Nasrec for a start then they should expect crime as it is not a circle route so the event would be desserted for a couple of hours.

They should get a security company which have accountability and not some car guards picked of the street where the organizers don't even know their names let alone id number or history.

All this to save money at the expense of the cyclists supporting the event.
