I think the only time it's good to wave your bottle around is when your about to launch it at someone, give the guy behind you a chance to sit up and watch the action...

Something else which got me into trouble on my first group ride in Holland was the bumslap.  It's a distinctly South African thing (must originate out of the CapeWink) and people look at you weird if you slap your butt here in Holland.  You just point or make a little backwards wave to indicate obsticals.  I no longer slap my own butt...

you can pay people to do that for you?

I could never understand when the bum slap came in. We've always pointed to an obstacle in the road but when I got back to riding after a few year, suddenly they start tapping bums.

can you imagine guys trying to do this with bite-valves on camelbaks...

I prefer to wave the whole Camelbak just to make sure everybody's noticed.

and while everyone is waving their camelbaks around' date=' why not handbags at 10 paces...?[/quote']

Don't be ridiculous. Pff.

I do however take my handlebars off and wave them around to signal a turn.

What goes good with the bumb-slap is a crotch-grap to show you need to go. It's all these little things that you learn as a pro!
