air shocks

what does it mean, when you say connect your shock pump to a rock shox sid, dual air, rear suspension top valve and as you connect the pump the shock makes a ppppffffft noise and just goes down?

 

Then every time you pump the pump, of course, all you hear is pffft, pffft, and the shock does no longer have any "bounce" in it ?

 

I checked the valves, they not leaking air, so any idea's before I go to the bike shop?

ok, I've only pumped my reba four times now and that's all experience i've got. but obviously what you describe is that when you attach the pump it pushes that little pint and because your pump is not tightened to seal the air comes out.  I've used a pump once (after a crappy fork service from a bike shop in stellenbosch centrum) which also didn't seal properly which consequently lead to my fork being pulled down through the air in the dampers.

so what you do now is figure out why your pump doesn't seal properly when you screw it on you shock. once you found that you must do something against it and magically your problem is solved!

its way more serious. I thought it was the the pump was not sealing onto the valve correctly. Put I dont feel any air coming through from where it seals.

 

When I try pump it up, I can feel the air coming out from the bottom of the shock. I think its stuffed!Cry

speaking of shocks.. my bike went in for a service after my crash and they very kindly pumped the shocks for me.  So hard that even with ALL of my body weight I can't get it to move.

Short of taking it back to the shop, how do I make it softer?

You'll need a shock pump, Nancy.

MR T, MR T...what next? Seals and service at agents ( Cape Cycle Systems) is not that expensive. Maybe do that. I would try another shock pump first though. My riding buddy had the same issue and it was the shock pump in the end.

 

It's worth the money to get a shock pump like this with a "pressure rite connector":

 

This allows you to connect the shock pump, then open the "pressure rite..." by turning a small dial. This opens the valve and allows you to pump or defalte. When you're finished first release "pressure rite thingy" before you remove shock pump from valve by unscrewing the head. No or very little air loss. Makes a BIG difference for set up if you don't lose 5psi every time you remove the shock pump.

Which shop is that? I would be pretty pissed if I take my bike to the shop and they change my suspension setup!

Problem with the service is that it highlighted some shortcommings on equipment that will now need to be sourced and upgraded over time.

 

the squeak is persistent, and the brakes not as sharp.

 

Time will tell

Remove the valve cap on top of the left stanchion (I think) and depress the pin in the centre to release some air. Also check that they have not accidentally activated your lock out.

Thanks sandstone, I checked that first and it's definitely not locked out.

Carefull when doing this. A fork and shock releases A LOT of air VERY quickly. It's best to have a shock pump handy. Do you know how to set pressure, Nancy?

Two ways:

1. According to weight

I have absolutely NO idea.. maybe these things are best left to the pro's. I'll take it back tomorrow Wink just won't go off road tomorrow morning
