The incident where young Bernadine was killed yesterday by a taxi driver who hooted at her and then deliberately drove into her just highlights how lawless this sector of the population have become.

They have absolutely no regard for the law or the lives and safety of others, furthermore Metro and the SAPS are plainly NOT doing anything about it.

In the area where I live with a number of schools nearby, taxi's regularly drive on the wrong side of the road or even on the pavement.

If we don't do something, this situation will just get worse and worse.

Please post your ideas here.

For some inspiration read this thread on Think Bike

Cool thread, They are getting a petition together. What it will help, I don't know but I will sign.

@Slowpoke - can you get that petition to the Hubbers?

Now that I've calmed down a little and am starting to have the occasional rational thought, I'm thinking along the lines of raising sufficient funds to bring a case against the MEC for law and order as well as the MEC for transport and the taxi associations for "criminal negligence".

Any lawyers out there got ideas?

Nice generalization.

In all honesty - I don't have much time for cyclists who ride like they own the road.

I'm also not referring to past incidents of cyclists getting knocked off but actual ones still riding their bikes.

Just remember that all who ride with Think Bike jackets aren't necessarily members of Think Bike. Anyone can order the jacket!

can the metro do anything about it? how often do you read stories about taxi drivers firing on metro cops? the sheer numbers of taxis make the industry impossible to police.

Hi HR - I disagree.

If there was the political will, they could get on top of the problem but taxis are pretty much organised crime and I'm sure influential people stop a concerted effort being made to bring the industry into line.

I'm not usually into these conspiracy theories but it is clear that the state does not tackle this lawlessness nor the direct confrontations the taxi industry make with the state.

They have the means but not the will, why?

The police and government have allowed the taxi industry to tie them over a barrel. Think CT taxi strikes, where the taxis are proud that they can bring the city to a 'standstill' by burning buses and threatening anyone who dares to use any other form of transport.

What needs to happen is for the govt and cops to show that they're not taking sh!t from these guys. Full riot gear, army (if we still have one), all of it. Sure, they may have some initial resistance, but the taxis will realise son enough that anything illegal will be punished.

Than again, the same can be said for the average SA motorist...

It would be awesome if some real action could be taken.

The major problem (relating to HR's comment) is that the taxi industry currently transports the majority of our workforce. If they strike, our economy is genuinely effected. It's a simple matter.

So we need some innovative thinking. Maybe going to the top with legal action would be a start. Who knows.

If there's somewhere to sign...let me know.

They are definitely organised crime. I have had it from some one who knows so to speak that Taxis are a common way of making criminal gains into legal ones. They buy taxis with their gains!

Nothing is impossible? <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Next time it could be someone you know?.

This might be a stronger case with the Soccer World Cup on our doorstep?.they might actually do something before the 3 million tourists get here..

I agree with JL and Droo, there is no will to do anything, and it certainly can be done, the guy's in the Nyala's wouldn't take any cr@p when responding to a taxi blockade.

A bonus would be that the motorists who have followed the taxis example, would rethink their behavior as well.

All laws are subject to the Constitution.

By voting, the individual charges the state to uphold the Constitution.

The ministers of Law&Order, Defence and Justice are charged in turn to manage the Police, Defence force and Courts to the same effect.

However.

If the Constitution and the law is not upheld,

RESPONSABILITY STILL STAYS WITH THE INDIVIDUAL.

The individual is in fact tasked with upholding the Constitution and as such must enforce the law if no one else does.

This is not taking the law in your own hands.

It is enforcing the law, neglected by others.
