Hi guys

Not new to the forum as I have been around a while reading what's been happening in SA cycling, but this is my first post Embarrassed. I recently (September 2008) started cycling after being inspired by watching TdF2008. I bought myself what I though was a pretty decent bike (08 Raleigh RC3000), which would last me for a while. I have since upgraded the wheels (Mavic Ksysrium) and I changed the horrible Raleigh saddle that comes standard with the bike. I have since discovered that I beside really enjoy the sport, I am reasonably good at it. Now I would like to upgrade my bike and I have been warned that I should spend as much as I can afford now, rather than having to upgrade every year or so.

Been looking around and beside all the flac they get on the forum, Raleigh still seems like a pretty good deal. I've been looking at the 2009 RC8000. Am I crazy to be spending R35k on a Raleigh? Is R35k to much to spend if your a begginer? Are there any other alternatives? With the component/wheels/stem/etc. that come on the RC8000, I feel I will be getting the most bang for my buck.

Thanks in advance.

Rory

For 35K the world is your oyster. Look at other brands and see what is available at that price. I think you will find a few bikes of your liking.

Not knocking Raleigh. I merely think you should shop around.

Welcome to this cesspool called the hub. Its a great place to live in.

If you can get a copy of Bicycling Feb issue there's list of bikes and components with RRP, the bike you dont want to give back after trial ride is the one for you.

Welcome rory21 .

This sport is amazing!!!

R35k for a raleigh.......NO WAYS.

What comes as a bargain is that it has a warranty.  Buying second hand, you will not have a warranty on the bike.

But.....

For R35k you can get soooooo much more second hand.

I bought a VERY good bike a month ago for R15k......sure it was a bargain of the century, but you get those every once in a while.

My advice is to have a look at what you can get for your R20k second hand.........

Then save the rest R15k for "In case your frame cracks" as insurance.

ENJOY it.......buying a bike is 50% of the cycling experience!!!

Do your homework as everyone says Rory.

I'm not going to advocate new or second hand, but 35k is a big price tag for a bike. Make sure the one you buy goves you the best bang for your buck.

If you keep your existing bike, you can change the group sets and all sorts of things every year and keep up with tech advancements that way.

If there is nothing wrong wth your current bike frame, why bother going to all the expense of buying a new one? Just change what you need and it will last a while. Then you will still have plenty left over for when they bring put 12 speed.

You buy a new 10 speed now, it's going to be just as dated in six months as your current bike with upgrades and the upgrade will cost a damn side less.

Just my opinon.

A critical thing to keep in mind is that the bike can be as good as anything, you still have to ride it. If you are so good as you say you are, then a lighter/faster bike can make a diff on in a race.

the flip side of the coin is, if you have got the money and you really wanna spend it do so.

I wouldnt pay that much for a Raleigh though. You must shop around, chekc out the hub - there are loads of second hand , and sometimes brand new bikes around, which you can pick up much cheaper and it could also pan out to be a much better deal quality wise.

Good luck with the decision, and welcome to the hub

Hi Rory

Do the only sane and intelligent thing.

Keep the old road bike and buy a MTB ... preferably something with style, character and "just feels right" qualities. Like a Scott.
