My work colleague, a avid roadie....complains quite a lot about the amount of glass shreds he finds in his tyres.

 

My question is: Is this perhaps a function of the tyre itself? i.e cheaper ones vs more expensive ones? His philosophy is to train on cheapies and race on his more expensive ones.

 

He actually inspects his tyres after each long ride (with a magnifying glass and tweezers!!)...and often finds embedded glass shreds in the tyres...sometimes these would go on to cause punctures...some time not.

 

Would the more expensive tyres perhaps not pick up glass as much? or which rubber compound is best to use?

 

Any ideas & comments?

What pressure u guys use ? mine are pumped to 3 bar i thought that was hard

For a standard 700x23C road tyre that's very soft!

I normally pump mine to around 7-8bar

I must say the Continental GP 4000s are the most anti glass tire I have ever owned.

Their not cheap anymore actually they are insanely expensive !

I inflate my tyres to 8-8.5 bar ( I weigh 90kg). I am over buying expensive tyres now because of glass on the roads, and am presently on Specialized tyres which are about the most affordable tyres I have found.

failing JB's comments, there is no correlation between the price of a tyre and its "protection" against glass cuts.  Often more expensive tyres are "lighter" and thus less puncture resistant.  Cheaper tyres with heavier rubber (and more rigid thread) are often better against glass

Agreed. All I meant is that I no longer waste my money on expensive tyres because I may have to throw them away after their first ride. No matter what they cost, you gonna ride over a piece of glass sooner or later (probably sooner) so may as well not spend too much.
