Can tell you one thing' date=' i dont care who rides specialized, il never buy one myself.[/quote']

i have a 2005 tarmac s-works and 2007 hardtail s-works,

never had a problem ever,

you say it like its only specialized but remember all brands have problems, everyone rips you off and no body wants to warrenty anything because of the costs for them but they do it anyway, some easier than others, its kind of like me saying il never buy an fsa carbon crank because the carbon strips out by the pedal and the alu insert becomes loose but other brands have had the same problem,

Hey Harry1, <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Thinking about this really gets the blood boiling again..

I ride a 05 Stumpjumper FSR, and last year some time I cracked the cross link in the suspension. This part has since then been beefed up considerably, (draw your own conclusions) and I had to fork out R300 for the new one. Was pretty pissed about it not being covered under the lifelong warranty, since it was a suspension part.

The best bit is that the bolt that holds the eyelet of the rear shock, which sheared in the first place leading to the cracked part, was replaced with an off the shelf treaded bolt. No imagine a treaded bolt used as a shaft for a shock. This lead to me having to replace the shock bushes at my own expense, and get a new bolt from Specialized, Still a normal steel bolt, busy rusting to crap because it is not the right part, but they are too useless to get the right part.

Bottom line: Problem not really so much with specialized as with the dealers and bike shops. Specialized is an awesome brand, but the locals, i.e. Le Pelaton, are absolutely useless and apathetic, and they are killing the brand for a lot of people. Some old story in South African cycling it seems.

Good luck with the battle...

This comes down to what happened a few years ago when i was working at a bike shop that imported Kuota bikes

A guy walked in on a saturday and said he will never buy a Trek because the bikes break!!! So we asked him why and he said that he was riding along and he hit a pothole and all of a sudden his front fork dissappeared and he ended up in hospital

he then continued to say that just fun would not replace the part because it was not covered in the lifetime warrantee???? so we do the calling to confirm this and they said it would have been covered if they didnt suspect that the bike was not set up correctly and that the headset was actually tightened

To make a long sotry short this guy had built the bike himself without the proper tools and he had not tightened the headset properly making the whole situation his fault

I am not saying that this problem that people are having with specialized is the persons fault but you also can not say that you will never buy a bike because they all break

Simple fact is that you will never get an indestructable bike and there will be bikes that are substandard according to the manufacturer and that is why you get global recalls by companies such as cervelo, trek, specialized and raleigh it doesnt mean that they are bad bikes it just means that they had a dodgy batch!!

Hi Harry1

I really feel for you.Cycling is an expensive sport and the last thing you need is problems with the frame.Service and quality has deteriorated over the past decade because of mass production. No one takes pride any more. The faster a product can get of the production line the faster they can build the next batch.Keep on nagging them until you are satisfied with an answer.Specialized is a brand that sells it self. The after hour service in your case sucks big time.Try and speak to someone high up in the ranks.Once the seller has its money they dont care what happens afterwards. Hope you come back with good news in a month or so.

This is exactly why we stopped dealing with them cause they try get their way out of everything that will cost them money. in actual fact there is only one shop in the whole of australia that now stocks them as far as i know. they are useless. if they dont have 08 frames left, dont you dare pay for the 09 frame they must cover the cost as they dont have an equivalent frame for you. serious you probably better taking your components and other stuff off the bike and buying something else with a better warrany system.

good luck man hope you come right.

I have never heard of a chain coming off and causing a crack. Don't take it lying down, fight for a replacement.

It is not uncommon for a chain to come off, frames should be made accordingly. They are basically admitting that their product is weak and cannot handle a de-railed chain.

By the way, I love Specialized, mine was totalled in an accident and I did not replace it with another as I could not justisfy their high 2009 prices.

R31 000 for a 105 equiped Tarmac is plain robbery.

Kindly permit me to respond on behalf of Le Peloton. It is not our custom as a distributor to participate in forums of this kind, but in the light of the serious allegations made, as well as the responses, we deemed it appropriate to offer some balance to the discussion and reassure both our current and potential future customers of our commitment to the highest possible standards in dealing with matters of this kind.

I have first hand knowledge of this event. I participated in the initial evaluation of the warranty claim when we received the frame on 18 February 2009. We immediately submitted the claim to Specialized International as we are required to do. The following day we received a decline from Specialized International, with the recommendation that we offer the dealer a crash replacement frame as per our crash replacement policy. This was communicated to the dealer and a crash replacement invoice issued to the dealer on 20 February 2009.

The issue was complicated by the fact that this was an '08 frame and only '09 frames were available as replacement. In accordance with standard Specialized International Warranty Terms and Conditions, customers are liable for any redundancy/upgrade replacements where the original item is no longer available as replacement.

In this instance the dealer insisted this was a warranty issue based on a defective design in the frame. This frame has been in production for some time and continues to be sold and used worldwide without this being raised as an issue. As such we persisted with what we considered to be a generous offer to the dealer.

This matter protracted until recently, when this thread was posted.

I submit pictures of the frame, without opinion, as an illustration of the incident (the original poster did not have the pics the Hub was requesting).

In addition, and in reply to other posts, a simple perusal of the standard terms and conditions of the Specialized International Warranty will indicate that the frame alone carries a limited lifetime warranty with the original purchaser of the product. Suspension components are specifically excluded as they are covered by a limited one-year warranty.

I strongly urge all Specialized (and other brand) users to familiarize themselves with their Warranty conditions.

In conclusion I wish to place on record that decisions taken by Le Peloton in this regard have in no way been influenced by this thread. They were made after consultation with the dealer concerned and took place some time ago. No doubt readers can draw their own conclusions.
