Choice of 20km or 40km, since it's my first ss race, I'll probably go for the 20. It's outside Pietermaritzberg so there quite hectic hills (so I'm told anyway). To try get some sort of training in I've been riding every single hill in sight! First race goal is just to finish in the top 3/4 of the field. :)

Aag no man, that's soft.

marketing and image is strong in modern singlespeeding.

Most people building single speeds and posting it here are doing it because of media and peers.

Most peoples single speeds are not their main whips.

Modern single speeding is not evolved from your youth 30years AGO.

more recently inspired by bike messengers.

A "cool" club of hip society that are "risky" and "unconventional"

there is an image attached: The hair the cap the unmatching wheels the lo pro the three quarter pants the messenger bag, the tats, the scratched steel frame and stickers.

Some have elevated it to discs and really expensive hubs and saddles and exotic frames.

Its big money and big business for bikes shops to stock the right RETRO stuff.

Its cool.

Its competitive, with polo and standing

Its social with group rides.

It certainly isn't just about my old bmx.

I ride SS because :

1. It is fun

2. It is the purest form of cycling - no gadgets, no noise

2. It is simple

3. There is a great deal of satisfaction knowing you can ride (almost) everything nature can throw at you with only one gear (and a rigid fork).

4. Hell yeah - because its fu*king cool!

5. And lastly I like the look on your face when I whip your as# with only one gear! (without me having to ever tell you or any other rider that I have only one gear - me knowing it is enough)

I recently found my magic gear - 38-20 on my 2005 Diamondback Apex - no tensioner needed and it's a great trail-riding gear.

Chumba 29er with EBB

mix of road and offroad stuff

34x16 for the road/flat mtb races

34x17/18 for the rolling mtb races

34x19/20 for the hilly mt races

It's always good to keep a bunch of ratios available.

Don't forget to change seat height when you change ratios on an EBB...

^ what a load of sentimental crap: "sense of childhood????"

I have just sniggered through the fixie scene article in this months mag. No-one speaks of their sense of childhood. That is a bit too 'no-no' for the "hipsters" Bwahahaha

As for the article about the All africa single speed champs: WHAT A JOKE!!! Without doubt the worst article, photographs and selection of d8ses I have ever seen.

This mag was a serious waste of money
