SRAM rear derailer

Recommended Posts

The two jockey wheels (or whatever they are called) on my SRAM X0 derailer is extremely worn. The top one much more than the bottom one. I want to replace them myself. Questions: 1. How easy is this to do? 2. Are these SRAM specific? 3. If not what can I use?

Final question what happens when these are worn?

It is very easy to replace these wheels. You can use KCNC wheels, you dont need to use SRAM wheels.

Take off the rear wheel, have a look on inside of hanger, use allen tool to remove the bolt on each wheel. Do it yourself - you?ll feel like the king.

Sram replacements are expensive and worn quickly. Various other brands available - check/ask compatible. Depending on where you live you will probably have to buy what?s available. Buy two pairs if you have the dough - especially if you?re considering to do some stage racing.

A worn wheel on top can lead to sloppy shifting in my experience, the bottom one of less importance. Note: they are usually bottom/top specific. Top one needs lateral movement to compensate for micro misalignment of gears.

Thanks. I will do this myself.

Except for KCNC what else is compatible?

depends which rear derailleur you have, some sram ones you can only use sram jockey wheels because on the top pulley the hole is not in the centre of the pulley. tacx might have a compatible option, kcnc wont work.

as i said, it depends which sram rear derailleur you have, on the x0 you can use kcnc, im using some on mine, but on the x9 the top is different.

As far as I know danlate is correct that on X0 you can use any but on X9 RD's it needs that fancy SRAM specific one at the top!

I have heard that some people file that guide on the upper one on X9's down and fit a standard one. Haven't tried it myself.

rubbish.

you can x.9 on any SRAM rear derailleur.

the only thing youhave to watchout for is the fact that the SRAM pulleys are 1mm wider than the KCNC so you have shim the KCNC pulleys to ensure that the chain does not rub the jockey cage when cross chaining.

Shims are the same as those used for disc brakes, 4x0.5mm is needed for the two pulley wheels.

so you have 0.5mm shim / Kcnc Pulley wheel / 0.5mm shim

same for the bottom wheel

The problem I am have with buying fancy KCNC coloured jockey wheels is after 2 rides the colour goes...Not worth the money if they only last a couple of rides.

Beg your pardon? Sorry but perhaps I was not clear I was saying it is not possible to use X0 or any other 'standard' pulley wheels on an X9 RD for the upper one anyway ........

i agree with you BB, but there is and exception, on the short cage x9 the top pulley is the same as x0, the hole is in the centre.

kcnc is not all that great. they become very noisy especially on the top pulley. ive put my old x0 one back on the top. they do look bling though smiley1.gif

Just buy "Genuine " Sram parts and get done with it. All this business of shims or filing things down to fit doesn't make sense to me. Just get the correct replacement parts.

You can fit any std pulley to an X.9.

the pulley will run in a different position and you will have to adjust the  derailleur position. I've done this.

Can't say that it was worth the effort but it can be done.
