Erik Kleynhans, who took part in world cup xc last weekend and Maties club chairman, was attacked late yesterday on the R44 outside Cloetesville, Stellenbosch. I saw Erik at emergency rooms last night, got stiches in lip and chin, front 2 tooth broken off, grazes on elbows, knees, face.

Not a happy chap, he was cycling back from work in CT (omnico), and about 2k's from home a few youngsters took a small kids bike and threw it into him as he was going down the hill. He fell, cars stopped, it was around 6pm, kids laughed and ran away. We seriously need to mobilise and do something.

Fockin kids...

There's a vasectomy thread going on somewhere here...

This is really bad news, I hope he has a speedy recovery and that the culprits are caught. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Even if you see these kids along the road to stop and ask them what they are up to places you in a very dangerous position. You never know what the motive is for them next to the road. Something needs to be done to ensure the safety of cyclists on this piece of road.

Erik I hope you heal soon and will be back on the bike as soon as possible.

Is this the kind of entertainment that kids need these days?

Apart from fencing them all in, what can really be done about this?

I was almost mugged 2 weeks ago near Cloetesville as well.

It's getting too dangerous to ride past there.

I stay in the same development as Erik. The problem is that we either need to pass Kayamandi or Cloetesville when we return from training, both are danger zones.

This is getting rediculous.

We have the right to ride wherever and be safe.

I made a case with the Police when almost got mugged and was promised that ther would be daily patrols during this time. But it seems nothing is being done...

That's terrible to hear, hope he's ok.

I see his name popped up on the Freedom Challenge entry list, this would seriously mess up training plans/race

Good luck Eric - Other thing - when you guys are cycling past there - be at least 2 riders - this way you can at least be more wake up and chances are you wont be bugged.

Had the same problems with these gangster/F(*&nuts. They also like to walk in front of you and "block" the yellow lane so you need to pass in the car lane with cars flying by at speed.

Don't highfive the smaler kids when they walk alongside the road - you know they sometimes stand there holding their hand out for you to highfive - never had a probelem but imagine the guy grab your arm or something - just ignore these kids and try and stay safe.

F - up that this has to be a problem. They just need to put up a camera like in the rest of Sbos- if somthing then happens you at least have footage to make a scene with and hopefully catch these fkers.

I know Im sounding a bit positive for a SAcan ... haha got to keep beliving.

Like a friend always say : "Things will not be better in the future, we just need to hope that it will stay the same a now!! "

Its not only cyclists who are targeted, a running mate of mine jogged past a woman sitting in a car with the hood up, he stopped and asked if he could help, - while he was peering under the hood somebody jumped out the undergrowth and hit him on the side of the head with a brick.

Stole his mobile phone and drove away with the woman.

The police said he shouldnt have stopped.!
