hi guys

could someone please explain what is the diff between a whey protein shake and a normal protein shake.im currently using the usn pure protein shake after a ride, but recently have picked up 2kgs.can the weight gain be attributed too the protein shake.

Whey is the type of protein used, and the USN protein shake is probably made out of whey protein.

 

Picking up weight is because you are consuming more calories than you are expending - doesn't really matter what form the calories are in.

 

in general though, protein is used by the body to repair and build tissue, while carbohydrates are preferred as fuel for activity.  Fat is used for certain other functions, and good fats should be consumed as well.

 

Protein, carbohydrate, and fat all contain energy (calories) and if you consume (eat) more energy than you expend, your body will store that energy in the form of fat.

True what Bruce is saying, but also pure protein is a meal replacement, additional carbs, etc, whereas the 'whey protein' shake is more specifically for adding only protein to your diet.

 

Even though, this would not be adding much weight if used only after exercise.  Rather check your eating habits (portion size, frequency, etc), vs your exercise type, sure you're cycling, but at what heart rate etc.  And then, as Bruce suggested do a daily calorie balance, and you should have an idea where there is room for improvement.

Whey Protein is derived from Milk, it's apparently the "best" protein since it gets into your system better than other cheaper proteins like those derived from Soy Beans and albumin from Egg.

You gonna have to eat less or train more to lose weight:-P

I also put on weight taking the USN protein drink. My eating habits did not change either and I ws training fairly hard. I thought the drink would help me recover quicker and perhaps help Tongue build some muscle.  either way the muscles did not grow and my jeans got tighter. Stopped the drinks, trained as normal and back to normal weight. Fortunatley I am a skinny guy so weight is not an issue for me. I just thought the protein shake would help with recovery after training and make me healthier, perhaps stronger from muscle growth. When it comes to nutrition its a minefiled out there and i guess commom sense and moderation work best.

hey colinw!that is exactly what has happened too me.the weight gain is not a problem but i assumed that the drink would help with recovery and muscle growth.

If you want to recover your muscle after a workout then rather use EAS L-glutamine. You don't pick up weight and your muscle feels harder and more recovered. Keep in mind you have 10 min after workout to take it otherwise its useless.

My 2c input here - my wife is on a special diet (thank goodness) and she is not allowed whey products, the diet actually mentions whey protein shakes as a NO NO!!! She saw a dietician that did a custom diet for her - to gain energy and resolve some health issue.

 

Just please take into consideration that her diet was worked out for her and each persons body is different. Seeing a specialist is a good idea.

best to count your carbs (there are various kinds of carbs, but look for net carbs, or available carbs, or sugar), including whats in the protein shakes. I've been looking for alternatives to USN because of the high carb content, and because its not as smooth and delicious as say EAS myoplex shakes.

Switched to EVOX this evening, a product called EVOX Super High Protein, with an advertised total carbs of 2g per 100g serving.

I been using USN Pure Protein and had good results from it, I lost weight using it as a meal replacement for breakfast, makes you feel full till lunchtime.

 

I also used it as a recovery drink very successfully I don't want to sleep after a hard race if I have had a protein shake, while I do if I just have a carb drink.

 

I used it after being advised by a body builder who has a protein shake after each workout. That is a body building technique. You probably should gain weight if you train hard and then have a protein shake and carbs, your body will repair the muscle and build more muscle to compensate for the training load, depending on the nature of the training.

 

I mean if you do hard strength work on your bike and then have a protein shake you should really build more muscle than if you had a  carb drink as the protein feeds and helps repair and regenerate the muscle tissue.

 

Protein is important in a diet.
