Gooday All,

Driving through Milnerton on my way to work this morning I got to thinking how do they (the powers that be) intend keeping the new bike/cycle lanes that they are making along Marine drive (and any other ones that are going up in the city at the moment) for bikes and cycles only? i.e. how are they going to stop the taxi's and any other road user that feels that thier time is more valuable than the hundreds of other people waiting patiently in the traffic from making it "their own lane" Angry Without puting up some kind of large concrete barrier between the "car lanes" and the bike lanes there is no way they are going to be able to control access to the bike lanes. Or am I missing something here?

They're NOT cycle lanes, they're RTS (Rapid Transport System) IRT (Integrated Rapid Transport) lanes ahead of 2010.

Now we'll have a clear view of the taxi's disappearing up the road as the mow us down.

I have a DA politician friend and it might be a great idea to consider petitioning the DA about this. Heck' date=' even get involved with the DA and have a say. I will hopefully see him in 3 weeks time and I'll pester him about what is happening.

Cool

This might go down better now since the DA won the WC.

I just dont see how a cycle lane is going to fit in on that road there. Close to that school just before the bridge going into paarden island, there is maybe like 1M of pavement.

Whats the good of that?

How many more cyclist will have to die before they build a flyover bridge or something smiley7.gif

I for one was trying to cycle along this route to work in the port. I feel far too threatened to ride these sections with the trucks and cars so close and without any escape route. Therefore a detour through the suburbs makes for a nice change, especially since the transport of choise is a MTB. The challenge is to get into Paarden Island, but up till now the sidewalk over the bridge sufficed.

This morning however the contractors have destroyed the complete sidewalk! Nevermind that I am a cyclist. There is nowhere for pedestrians to cross the bridge safely between Milnerton and Paarden Island. there are even some very accident inviting open manholes! Those are illigal!

I want to take this up with somebody since a waiting period of three weeks before speaking to a council memeber is too long. The contractor need to fix this by this afternoon!

Can anyone tell me who to contact please?

I am a regular commuter along this route and I asked one of the construction managers RE the cycle path. The answer was a 3m lane for cyclists.

I never questioned the isolation of the lane from the general traffic though.

Regards

Hairy

P.S ... I have a rather fun commute from Table View to CT that cuts out most of the tar/road sections if you have enough thorn protection in your MTB tyres then this if fun and a half decent workout,
