Over the years SRAM has gradually expanded its component empire, branching out from its original transmission business by acquiring manufacturers of suspension, brakes, and finishing kit. The obvious gap in the SRAM portfolio has been hubs and wheels.

That gap has now been plugged, with composites specialist Zipp set to become part of SRAM within a couple of months. Stan Day, CEO of SRAM said: "Zipp is a great company and respected brand, with a strong management team, advanced technology and superb manufacturing capability."

Andy Ording, president of Zipp said: "Zipp has remained focused on market defining technology development in advanced composites and aerodynamics. After nearly two decades of carbon product manufacturing the SRAM opportunity provides additional horsepower and improved global market leverage."

No changes are planned within Zipp itself. At the moment Zipp only does road wheels, but we'd imagine that some sort of Zipp MTB wheel will be forthcoming in the not-too-distant future.

Let me redeem myself by saying something you might not have known..

Had a chat to someone regarding tire sealents and the effect of stans etc...

Apparently the main reason tires bubling/delaminating is because the air gets into the bead...nothing to do with sealent.. sh*t, now are they telling me to go tubes again?? NEVER...

Hey crow.. Cant wait to ride this weekend man.. bit of mud.. ooh Im a kid in a candy store.

Geez, I feel stupid too!  Didn't know that SRAM took over Zipp, but I'm glad I got SRAM put on my new bike with it's Zipp wheels!!!  Going to go and pick it up in less than two hours.

Does this mean that Zipp VumaQuad cranks will become SRAM red cranks?

I doubt it.  Strangely SRAM also recently brought out their own carbon wheels in direct competition with Zipp!  Strange, but I guess they are aimed at a slightly different market segment.
