Yep, they've upped their game considerably! I've uploaded a few rides there over time. The rides I've logged on sportstracker

I have 2 HRMs (Polar 720 -cycling/track running and Garmin Forerunner - roadrunning) Embarrassed so I'll skip the Nokia when I'm due for an upgrade

Did you get the salespack with the 3 different colour backplates? Change the backplate and your desktop background colour changes to match the backplateCool.

Ok, the PR Dept has given one N79 Active for interested Hubbers to try out. It will be your responsibility to collect the Handset and return it to me in Sunninghill or West Rand. Use will be for a maximium of 1 week. Please this is only if you are really interested, otherwise you are denying someone else the opportunity. PM Me

I was keen to get one of these phones as I am due for an upgrade now. So I did a little research and came up with this review from a current user. Guess I wont or rather don't want one anymore.

Report

Dont buy N79 for sports activities! The large hole on the top of the phone consumes even the smallest amount of sweat and leads it into the phone's brain - and puff! It's dead, and Nokia won't repair it even though this is a heave fault by the construction of the phone!

N79 does not respond to your actions. You cannot be sure of the outcome of your actions on the phone. This is not a phone for a novice. You have to be a complete phone nerd to accept this phone. It hangs up. The phone lock has to be activated several times before it reacts both on closing and on opening.
Physical, the back cover is untight. The connection of the handsfree is a big hole on the top, so be careful to make a call under wet contions. The keypad is inaccurate and you must check eagerly which digit or letter you are hitting.
The switch screen is ok when you want to watch photos, but it often switches when you just don't expect it to switch.
The GPS is inaccurate and misleads you from time to time. It may tell you to make a u-turn on the highway!
The sound is poor, and the loudspeakers sounds like tin cans.
I could go on and on telling about all the functions that will be bothering you during daily use.
But, the most severe drawback is that it may be difficult to answer calls!
A fresh installation of the software dosn't help either.
One should not have thought that Nokia had tested this phone at all.
So, show a little kindness to yourself - don't buy this phone. by Unregistered

The N79 is light, so it may not be easy to keep the phone steady.
Sometimes the camera functions does not respond to opening the slot. You try and try, but the smile on peoples faces fade away long before you are ready to take your picture.
The flash gives people green faces.
The flash also lights up 90 degrees, because of a gap between the frame and the rest of the phone. You therefore get light rings on your photos and sometimes the picture is light only.
So, this is not a camera phone. by Unregistered

I have been plundering with the phone since day one. I have reset the software, formatted the phone. But nothing worked like it should. I did not even manage to answer calls! Beat that! And then it died. Nokia has sent me pictures that shows that sweat has come into the phone by the earplughole on the top. What an idiotic place to have an open hole directly into the brain of the phone. I think the Finns may have been drinking a little too much Koskenkorva when they designed this phone. And of course Nokia refusers to repair the phone. But this is caused by a malfunction by the phone, having a large hole on the top of a phone marketed as a sports phone - N79 Active! Nokia and N79 really sucks -

Dirty Twin, I have used the N79 now for 3 weeks, ridden in the rain and taken photos etc and I have my choice of phones, I have decided to stay with the N79. Matter of Opinion I guess. Still if the N79 is such a bad phone as the writer suggests then you can always get another and download Sportstracker and get the HRM. As I said you can make any Nokia Phone with GPS an Active Phone does not have to be an N79.

Wheelsuck is the N79 the phone with the bluetooth HR belt that Andrew road tested on Supercycling a few weeks back???

If so when will it be available. I will be in RSA during the first two weeks of June. I am due for an upgrade and i think this will be my choice. i am currently on a Weekender package as this is the cheapest for me here in the bush as I never use my RSA SIM while here. What will I have to pay in to upgrade to the N79 and will it be available?????

For me it would just have been another Gadget. I have a Garmin 305edge with HRM, Cadence and all those other lekker things and when it failed last year Garmin/Avnic replaced it at no cost to me other than the courier cost to send the unit to them. I have Nokia N81 so I suppose I don't really need a N79.

Just thought that the battery life might have been better than the Garmin but I guess not as the Garmin lasts me to at least 12-13 hours.

Anyway I am a die hard NOKIA FAN but I guess this phone would be a duplication of goodies that I already own.

Thanks W. Will wait a while not in too much of a hurry to upgrade as I have the N81. Does Nokia still make those shock risistant/water/dust etc resistant type of phones. Maybe that is the way for me to go.

Details Pmed
