The diff between a Ferrari and a Vw is Huge' date=' The diff between a house in clifton and Kyalitcha is huge , the diff between a 2004 Pntium 3 and a dual core Pentuim is big. The diff between a 10k bike and a 50k bike is SMALLLLLLL.       It's in the legs

Does it feel better to win on a old peugeot steel frame or to be last on a Cervelo???????

Trust me , you will be admired on the peugeot and laughed at on the cer

I think a further distinction ought to be made between road and MTB.

The difference between a R5k road bike and a R150k one is smaller than the same price gap on a MTB.

seems to me there are 7 honest people on the hub and 30 prats from Jhb that want to justify their wasteful ways.  I can spend R30 000 on a bike, but why would I WANT to?  I want to spend R30 000 on something else more important than cycling, like my house bond, car, wife, kids, holiday ext.

But each to his own.  There are none so commited to a cause than false profits (prophets).

Same goes for houses cars and clothes. Why wear a levi when you can buy at woolworths or pep. Why ride a Merc or BMW when you can ride Volkswagen or Honda. Why live in a R4mil house by the see when you can go much cheeper closer to work or whatever.

Not all image you know. Just becuase you can!! Its not always a matter of trying to be better' date=' just if you like it and can afford it do it.

Some ppl will put more money into food, or clothes or cars, while others would think its a waste do eat out everynight of ride a milion rand car. Or a 50K bike for that matter.

People have different opinions on spending patterns and that does not make it wrong to spend on what you love.

just my opinion - obviously there will always be posers out there too. Just live with it

I agree with u ASTANA, was having lunch with some ladies a couple of weeks ago. Buy this eye cream it does amazing things R800.00 for 1 month, and look at this leather bracelet with a bit of puta in itR3000.00, and I looked at my cycling buddy, and said and she agreed i rather spend it or put it toward a better pair wheels.

You dont have to be a super model to wear a pair of jimmy choo's and i dont have to be a great rider to ride a cervelo. There is nothing nicer when you change gears and its smoothe and no noise at all, just beautiful engineering. my 2c

People have different priorities...at races I see people driving a BMW X5 with a R5 000 bike hanging at the back and then I see people driving an 20 year car with a R80 000 bike hanging at the back.

I do appreciate a good bottle of red wine and willing to pay money for it....then you get wealthy people who does not want to spend more than R50 of a bottle of red wine.

Sometimes it is just difficult to understand how people work and think about things in life....but hey....it keeps life interesting!!

Dura ace on the cervelo diffrence of a few grams, same performance. Ultegra on 10k  bike same performance slightly heavier. worth 40K?

What I find the most amusing is that my Honda CBR600 cost R80k. Now I can easily buy a road bicycle for R80k. Ok - so now we put the two together in my garage and I compare the technology used. And I must be happy with my bicycle? - no chance in hell.

On a serious note. I went from a 5K MTB to a 25K MTB and the difference was HUGE. About 6kg lighter and everything worked better and when the going got tuff they still worked.

I still have the 5K MTB and ride it from time to time. And the Diff ist still Huge.

I have recently ridden a 60K MTB and the ride is better but not in the same leauge.

I don't know where the break point is, but there must be one. At some point the price increase is not realy justfied the ride benifit. (There is still one though, all be it very small)

On the road bike side I went from 5K to about 20K and I can honestly say that I am still looking for the benifit. So who knows.

You have to ride a 7kg carbon bike with light, fast wheels to understand. Spending money is one thing, spending it wisely is a different topic altogether.
