Well, I have seen clips on YouTube and such of frames snapping without warning! Crash, boom, bang kind of thing! But that's mostly on extreme downhill/jump/world-speed-record-attempts kind of stuff.

Carbon frames, like all frames will develop some kind of noice or hairline crack before it comes apart. Most people notice it when cleaning/riding their bike.

hahaha you imply then, theat i'd have to wash the bike every now & again. it's a roadie bike that only comes out once a year - i can't remember when last it saw the inside of a bikeshop or some water. or even lube!

will check it over before i take it to the road in november.

A carbon bike frame will last forever if it is not damaged by crashing etc.

Properties (strength & stiffness) will degrade if immersed in water over long periods, so it is advisable to dry it out thoroughly after a rainy ride to make sure no water is trapped in the frame.

As a matter of fact, aluminium and steel frames will also last forever if designed right, like FanieFiets said, the story that frames starts to flex with age is an urban legend, invented to help the bike industry sell more bikes, and based on a half truth.

Hmmm' date=' this is an interesting one. I've heard rumours/stories of carbon frames going "soft" after a few years, and in my mind that may be true about the early carbon frames.

As other hubbers have said, I very much doubt that Boeing etc would use carbon if this was the case (a planes service life is around 30years, give or take the market it works in), or Ferrari et al make supercars and F1 cars if this was the case....

Carbon in cycling gets some funny stories attached to it, added to by entertaining pictures of snapped frames - seems it's no longer 'interesting' to post pics of a steel or alloy frame that's bust.

Yes, occasional failures are down to manufacturing defect, but more often than not it's the JRA type excuses that lead to failures - think the alloy MTB with the ding half way down the top tube; the rider takes a massive fall,  the handle bar smashed into the tube etc ..... All materials have tolerance, and all to often, we, the crazy cycle riding public, are exceeding them, whilst expecting miracles from our expensive machines.PPWTF2009-06-02 23:41:26
