To Medal or Not to Medal

SA is really into getting the numbers at races with the lure of medals or something to collect as a reward to finishing.

 

Since I moved to Aus, they dont really have a fun rider category or lots of big races, and only 1st to 5th get timed, otherwise the rest they dont care about.

 

I think the medal thing is a good idea as it gives a participant something to look forward to, giving out T-shirts would cost more than medals at the end of the day as they would have to cover all sizes and logistically that would cost more.

 

So sticking with the medals is a good idea as it encourages numbers to races.

Free energy bar or snack for the drive/ride home after the race. Could get sponsor involved and this will help bring the cost of the race down.

 

Should eat and drink within an hour of racing

I still say if we have a medal thing it would be nice to have it like the comrades...split by time finishers getting different bronze, silver or gold and finisher medals.

 

I personally don't need a medal and would rather race for podium but as no.one.knows says, SA is big on funriders and we need to nurture that.

I personally dont take the medals but Im sure for other people its cool to get and have a sense of accomplishment.

I think we stick to the medals. If I got a water bottle for every race I have done I would need to have a second house to keep them all. What I did with my medals is put up a rail and then hang them on that. Takes up little space and always visible.

Emperors palace road race did that in 2008 and Carnival City road race 2008 gave out chain stretch checkers(don't know if they actually work...) I thought it was a nice change from ordinary medals.

harder to achieve what? Even if you come last you will still get the same medal as the guy that came 4th.

 

I was referring to the comrades concept. If you have medals for different times you come in, it will make you push harder to achieve a better medal.

 

In general, I enjoy racing and thus like getting the medal as a reminder of the race.
