Best buy under R3000?

Someone will probably be along in a mo with a URL, but it goes something like this:

- Cantilever (won't get this on new bikes anymore)

- V-brake: Still spec'd on new bikes. Generally lighter and less complex, but [reputedly] with less modulation than discs. A good V is [way] better than a bad mechnical/cable disc

- Mechanical/Cable Disc: heavier than v, less durable than hyd,

- Hydraulic disc: The sh!t if you're willing to sacrifice [some] weight. Excellent modulation, but might be prone to fade

My guess is that on a lower end bike you'll not get hyd's and it might not be worth the money to upgrade to these since the weight of the frame will not warrant this. Start with mechs and a lower end bike and do an overall upgrade when you know you like the sport & what you want in a bike...

My humble opinion.

Just wanna add one thing . All the frames in this range weigh the same . So you can upgrade as you go along . BUT upgrading from Mec to Hyd is a very expensive story !

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I am going to pick up my new bike this afternoon! I have finally decided (after looking at quite  a number of bikes) to go with the Silverback Phoenix! It comes with a lockout suspension and 9 speed Shimano Deore system. I'm getting it for R3300 brand new and in my opinion a very good buy compared to the other bikes in that price range. I feel that it might be a good start for me and I can always upgrade later to a bigger and better bike.

Thanks for all the help guys! Based on the stuff you guys helped me with I could actually know what the sales guys were talking about and what to look out for. Thanks again!

Hey Charvel,

I have been following your progress! I'm a roadie but it looks like I might have to take a little peek at the wild side! Which bike shop did you buy your steed from?

Well, I thought it would be less strenuous on the bike if I just kept riding it around our complex...but alas. You guys are more than welcome to join me for my maiden voyage in the open...in Heidelberg.

Awesome MTB route's around Heidelberg. They also have a nite ride which i'm keen to do, just got to get some lights sorted first.

Charvel, making the ride in Heidelberg will not scare DR off, he is always keen to usher in new MTBers and make sure that they finish their first ride with the requisite sily grin!!

MichaelH, you are in the Linden Cycles region... go and get a steed to tackle the dirt with and we'll sort you out with where and when!

In Boksburg, one of my mates used to stay in Heidelberg but now stays in Nigel so i ride quite often in Nigel/Heidelberg area.

Your mate isn't by any chance called Jacques? But otherwise I'm glad to hear of a fellow biker in that area though!
