My wife had heres done 5 years ago. Over the weekend she was saying that she will do a eye test as it feels like she might need glasses again.

Even if she needs glasses now after 5 years, she feels the op was worth it. Had hers done in Stellenbosch.

I found this link with all the Cons: http://www.lasikcomplications.com/TopTenReasons.htm

It also ends of saying it's better to stick with Contact lenses of Glasses. But I hate wearing Glasses while cyling cuz they just get dirty or fog up and then I have to take them off esp when Mtb'ing' date=' Road racing is fine.[/quote']

well that person that tells you to stick to contact lenses must go and read the negatives of contacts on the web. Contact lenses is sooooo bad for your eyes especially when cycling!!!

Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK)

LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis) is a relatively new procedure that is technically a variation of PRK. LASEK is used mostly for people with corneas that are too thin or too flat for LASIK. It was developed to reduce the chance of complications that occur when the flap is created.
LASEK is marginally safer than LASIK, as the need for a microkeratome is eliminated, so there is no risk of flap complications.

High levels of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are treated by removing tissue within the cornea.

Treatment of nearsightedness: the steep cornea is made flatter by removing tissue from the center of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.

Treatment of farsightedness: the flat cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central optical zone of the cornea. This moves the point of focus from behind the retina to directly on the retina

Treatment of astigmatism: the cornea is made more spherical -- like a soccer ball instead of a rugby ball. This eliminates multiple focusing points within the eye and creates one point of focus on the retina. Astigmatism can be treated at the same time as nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Marius, if your eyes are stable and you are SHORT-sighted, I'd say go for it (lots of other things to consider, such as eye and general health, corneal thickness, tear quality etc etc). However, if you are FAR-sighted (hyperopic, ie your lenses are thicker at the centre than at the edges) I'd suggest look at contact lenses. There is not currently a satisfactory procedure if you are hyperopic and under age 50.

However, best to consult a reputable surgeon and not one that will operate no matter what.

Good luck.

Thx Taps -  I'm FAR-sighted - can't see rocks and stuff when Mtb'ing, must be why I Fall so much...everything is a blur. I also have night blindness so try not to drive at night. I was thinking of trying Contacts first with a pair of Cycling glasses to stop them from blowing out, dunno if it'll help thou.

Sounds like you're myopic (SHORT-sighted). If you can see your hand without specs but can't see far away, you're short-sighted. far-sighted is somewhat different.

Used to wear hard contact lenses for farsightedness.

Had the LASIK treatment sometime last century at a cost of R4500/ eye

In my case it was dream come true to be rid of glasses / contacts.

I did notice that my night vision was worse after the LASIK compared to glasses or clean contacts, but not enough to worry about.

I would not hesitate to do it again.
