To get yourself that kind of moeg when riding mountain bike you must have very good skills' date=' otherwise you'll rest enough while negotiating the tough technical bits.....

Dont agree, my first MTB race was Barberton, so no technical skills to speak of, and I almost died.  Not even the windy Argus could get me as tired as those flippen Barberton mountains.

A road race is only tough if you get dropped and can not slip stream anymore. A MTB race is tough from the start' date=' not slipstreaming, ever.[/quote']

Oh, right. Must be the reason you see guys attacking off the front of the bunch in road races... That's where it's easiestConfused

I purchased a MTB recently - in fact I only got it on Fri. Havent yet ridden it except for a few laps round the front garden when I got home.

Now I am so frightened of this tough cr@p I have gotten myself into, I will have to post in classifieds.

Brand new - done 100m's- Silverback Alpine XL

Tubeless conversion

Shimano pedals

Bar ends, and I'll also throw in the remainder of the sealant I got back from LBS.

Bargain buy!!

Why if this thing is so difficult is it one off or the fastest growing sport around?

I see plenty people enjoying it, they in no shape at all (ok - round is a shape too).

Isnt the degree of difficulty/enjoyment directly linked to the fitness, pace you raide, skills you have, where you ride?

On the road it certainly is.

when they asked jfk why they sent man to the moon, he replied that they didn't send man there because it was easy, they sent him there because it was difficult?

Interesting to see how many pro road riders are having fun MTB'ing

during winter. There's nothing better than flying past people without having to watch out for cars behind you.

Looking forward to fixing my MTB this week.

Majority rules....MTBing is harder....but it's soooo much more rewarding. This is why more and more peeps join this lovely sport! Even the roadie pro's are getting dirty...says a lot.

Come race at Killarney - You will afkak in the slipstream too!

MTB is more technical, and does require a skillset and balance that road riding does not. Even if you are uber fit in both, if you don't have the skills to decend a mountain then you will get dropped.

All levels can go out and enjoy a mtb ride - the differences in skills only became vastly apparent when you turn up the pace.

You cannot compare the two. the only thing in common is the fact that you use a bicycle.

It's two completely diferent diceplins. I get bored out of my mind on a road bike, but let me ride that same road on a fixie , and it's all cheese.

If I had to do the same section of road on my mtb, "CRAP!". You know what I mean. So let's stop trying to see who is the greatest, and respect each other for the disepline whe enjoy. I wish I can Climb like a roadie, DH like a madman. And do the technical stuff like a true MTB CHAMP...

That about sums it perfectly...

Riding Racing Wheel sucking in a group or "peleton" is definetly easier if can keep up to the group.

Any form of racing is hard provided you actualy take an active part in the racing. The average road racer spends a lot of time wheel sucking at a lower than race effort level, compared to a mtbker who has to maintain his race effort mostly on his own.

Why I love MTBing is that I can get more fun for less. Just need a couple of Km's to have some awesome fun than look for a 100km stretch of road. Personal preference too.

Even though Kogelberg is 24km, it was challenging and so much fun. Did it in 2hours the 2nd time with iragr - we had to swim a few meters too with our bikes, and the view was just way too awesome to describe.

Road cycling will never do it for me, and thats just my preference and opionion.
