Perhaps too clicky with customers i.e. there were a small pool of customers who received the really good treatment and perhaps larer discounts?

I went into WE about 3 years back and that was the first and last time . I had just started cycling and the wife was at Tygervalley doing shopping and i decided to do some shopping of my own and got a real cold shoulder . Maybe i did not look the "Part" but anyone who walks thru the doors is a potential customer and should want to come back ... I certainly did not want to go back .....

as has been said very sad for those who are now without jobs in these trying times hope all turns out well .....

a while ago when my LBS couldn't get me a Campag chain in time (I had to wait 3 weeks for delivery), they said I must shop round, go to Willie etc....I just didn't feel comfortable doing that....so I rather waited .... Confused

Thats the best sales tactic to keep you loyal ... LOL how I use to do that in my sales days. Would always recommend my clients go compare products and prices at certain competition when I could not close the deal. Never lost a sale to my biggest competition that way. I ended up working for them and then never lost a sale to my previous employer LOL

the discussion is about WE lifestyle centre. Willie himself is not the topic of discussion nor his lifestyle. that is a separate issue.

The shop failed and has been failing for some time. Basic business principals and I think the little incident Where he rode the Argus without entering crashed and had to helo'd out all come to bare on the business failure.

None of this makes Willie a bad person so lets not get defensive when no defending is needed. Lets focus on the business.

So why did WE lifestyle centre fail? Was it just a victim of the recession or are there underlying business practice failures that caused this foreclosure?

Also is there such a thing as voluntary liquidation?. An enterpriose can only be liquidated by a creditor. I'm not too familiar with SA commercial law but I think a business owner file for protection against bankcrupsy sequestration. So perhaps thats whats happended here.

Quite correct lefty.

Willie (the person) is not in question, its the business he just happened to own.

Like it or not, it will be discussed and reviewed over coffee, in the office, on rides or here on the forum, theres nothing wrong with it and perhaps it can even be usefull to future or present enterprises.

Not living in the Cape I only visited the centre a few times when on a business trip or visiting my vacation home just down the road, cant say I was ever very poorly treated, but certainly nobody fell over themselves to get my money. I thought it odd as there was firece competition 500metres down the road, but hey, what do I know.!

Yes, an owner can put the business into liquidation, (ie) close the doors and negotiate a deal with all creditors -  however the fact the sheriff was involved means this is unlikely to be the case.

As a rule, the Sheriff only gets involved at the bitter end, and after all the legal proceedings (ie) eviction or locking the doors and securing the assets for auction.

Its probably no consolation, but the centre is unlikely to be the last, this winter has just really kicked in and the recession is deep, summer is still 3 months away and a floundering bottom line now is a death knell.

In any business now, cash is king - as Warren Buffet says "if ya dont have debt, ya cant go bust" - sage words indeed.

I've been keeping a good eye on this post, purely because I work literally down the road from the shop and use to go in there just to talk crap with the guys.  I cannot say that I spend to much money there, but hey, the are nice, once I got to know them, still sad that I never made the night rides.

What I would like to add to this thread is if any one of us know the facts, or, if we base what we are sayin on roomers.  I mean, was the sheriff really involved, I'm not sayin g it isn't so, but, it would be nice if we keeo with the facts, and from what I can gather, the only know facts are the sms and that their doors are closed.

I am sure that they will re-open, maybe not this year, but there certainly is a value to the name WE as well as a market for what they sold, not that I could afford it, but they still had the biggest range of stock of all the shops.  I also always though very highly of the fact that they stayed in the small "low key" shop, I mean, he could have opened a monster store at Willow Bridge, next to all the other boutique type shops, or even opened up next ro the Pro Shop, or over at Fruit and Vedge, also and Willow Bridge, but they stayed small, always though that it was a good idea.

Let's see what happens over the next few months.
