The expat cyclist Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 XTR ShiftersXT drivetrain Works for me...Have the results to proof it!
swoosh1973 Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Guys how can you vote one above the other if you have not rode the different versions? I have only had experience with XT and LX versions, thus my vote goes here as i have had excellent service and not much to complain about. However this is all i have been riding the last 4 years and know nothing else. I seriously want to know if the grass is greener on the other side. If theres anybody with experience on both SRAM and SHIMANO then please let us know? Is there nobody here that has experience with both Shimano and SRAM? I would realy be interested inhearing some unbiased comparisons.
Capricorn Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Mr Iraqr: you dont really have to test both to know the difference. From a statistical perspective, given a large enough sampling from a group of users, one can determine which brand is the most used, which in turn suggests satisfactory function and reliability. This is more reliable if the target items are ?more or less of equal value, which discounts price as a defining criteria, but rather the reliability and functionality. Granted, this poll is slightly loaded wrt mentioned brands, ie 2 for SRAM and 1 for Shimano XTR specifically. But that simply mean the last option "othe" would have been loaded requiring the poll raiser to investigate other more carefully. That said, it isnt, and most respondents seem to favor the SRAM brand. 34 in total for SRAM,and only 22 for Shimano XTR + other. That's approximately 61% vs 39%. A tad significant dont you think?
Sammajoor Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 You know what, although I am biased towards SRAM others are biased towards Shimmy. The best groupset is the one you are comfortable with, the one you can afford, and the one that YOU use
Capricorn Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 that might be true, but what the statistics suggests is why you are biased: most ppl dont have a blind allegiance to one brand or the other. Most buy what works, ie gives real value for money. But IMHO, if someone buys just because say it's Campag, or whatever brand, thats on the same colossal scale of fail as voting for say, the ANC because it's the ANC.

LazyTrailRider Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 The best groupset is the one that gives you the best performance for the least amount of money and that is Shimano SLX. Exactly: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/mountain/product/slx-groupset--32811 "It may not have the light weight sexiness of XTR or the bruising durability of Saint, but for sheer bang for buck, SLX is the best off-road groupset Shimano has ever made."
Iwan Kemp Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 I have been fortunate enough to ride just about evry SRAM & Shimano groupset and was also involved in a one on one, back to back test. Speed and ergonomics aside, SRAM will shift smooth, crisp and precise for longer than Shimano. It needs less TLC to set up and to keep it going. I'm an avid fan of gripshifts, but if I have to go triggers it'll probably be Shimano. Not cause it's better, but I prefer the functionality. Also I don't ride use grips cause it's lighter, I do cause I don't like all the push, pull, grap levers all over the place and I can drop more gears and shift quicker with grips. Being able to microshift the front der is a big plus when you're out on an epic ride in the mud and pouring rain. Another small plus for SRAM is the fact that the rear der cable doesn't make a big loop. That can be a BIG plus when riding in overgrown sgl track. (Anyone say Majik?!) On the brake side: pretty much doesn't matter what you ride, but if it's Shimano it's underperforming. Avid, (some) Magura, Hope and especially Formula are all better stoppers. As for Shimano front der with SRAM kit: that started couple of years ago on OE when SRAM's front der wasn't up to scratch and the fact that there was no X0 front der in their range. Now it's just market perception. But that'll change soon enough with XX and other new offerings set to drop in the market 2010/2011. Shimano used to dominate the OE market cause they had MTB & RB groupsets. "Sure we'll do you an OE deal on RB groupsets, but then you have to spec your MTB's with Shimano as well." Not that Shimano is all bad. Their SLX groupset is probably the best value for money groupset on the market. XTR is and was and will for sometime still be a sought-after premium groupset. Unfortunately it's seriously overpricesed locally. I'd rather save 50% on a new purchase, sacrifice 150g and ride XT. It lasts longer and blades are MUCH cheaper. There, quite a mouthful, but it's early and I'm waiting for a call from France!

Also over there you get the full range of SLX and other Shimano goodies. Not here. It is a good groupset and it does offer great value for money, but not on the same scale as abroad
dirtrider Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 LX/SLX by far and yes I have been on bikes with XTR/Xo,9,7 and no gears !!! And you can have top of the range GS but with out proper cables you got nothing
