I received this email today...... anybody know anything about it??????

"Please be aware that the de-merit system came into effect as from midnight last night. Points are being deducted for traffic violations on different scales and on this new system gets stored under your ID number, thus you could lose your license without even knowing it. This morning a number of people from UNISA as well as CRUVET were fined with heavy fines. There is no more 10km/h grace like in the past and they start from the first 1km over the speed limit. As from today they are out in full force."

Yep it's true.  Got the new tarriffs for fines but it is to long to post here.

e.g.

Pedestrian or cyclist disobeyed regulatory sign<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

R 100

The new system's name is Aerto.  It is only effective in Pretoria and Johannesburg.  But if you get points against you it goes on the licensing system on your car registration which is used country wide.  15 points and you lose your license.cyclingfan2009-07-09 06:31:56

The lady chief traffic officer was on Summit TV a month back and said the system was only going live nationwide in Q1 2010? but anything is possible..

My speedo is out with 8km/h at 120km/h, according to garmin. It will be stupid of the traffic police to start from 1km/h over. This is the list on speeding.

Speeding<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

They have been talking about this for ages.

I think the ones about pedestrians are a joke. You mean to tell me that all the people we have walking wherever they want across streets are going to pay fines?

They wont even be able to issue them a fine as they wont have an ID on them and will claim not to know the ID number.

Will have to wait and see.  That iol report ORCA posted is a 2008 report.  Not too long ago it came to light that the legislation for this has not really been proven in court and until that is sorted out, this whole AARTO thing is still only on paper.

there are some real beauts on the lis

Driver not licensed    R 1 250    4pnts - so where to what do they record your points? your ID?

Disobeying stop sign or robot with non-RWC vehicle    R 500    1pnt - cool so im going 2km/h over the speed limit, but i jump a red robot and sideswipe a car, R500 1 pnt no worries

Accelerating while being overtaken    R 1 000    3pnts - one of my favourite pastimes!

On road less than 5,5 metres wide    R 250    0pnts - you guys carry a tape measure in your cubby?

Pedestrian moving into path of vehicle suddenly at crossing    R 100    0pnts - will they live to tell the tale...

It has always been like that.  You drive 69 in a 60 zone they will let you go.  Drive 70 in a 60 zone, you get fined for driving 70 in a 60 zone.  Nothing new to that.
