dirtrider Posted July 15, 2009 Share As only a champion hubber he can never be as clever as us ultimate hubbers . Anyway take her to the shop , get her on a few bikes and take note of when she smiles the most . Get her that bike , but she will most probably want the new lady specific Spez anyways . Wonder Woman Posted July 15, 2009 Share Newby, funny enough I'd also say soft tail...a hard tail bike is a bit less forgiving both on the body and when you start with the technical stuff. But then that depends if you have the finances for that, unfortunately a decent soft tail will cost a bit more. What does she do now to keep fit?? and if she is, she'll enjoy the mtb, I love it, gives you a bit of the thrill gymnastics does when it came to trying new moves and she should be used to falling and she knows how to so won't hurt herself badly. She's an ex-gymnast, means she should have power and strength, don't under-estimate her too much.

MoreTrails Posted July 15, 2009 Share I started my babe on a HT that I built up for her - lots of emphasis on the "I will build you a bike - i.e. not one other like it, special, and all that stuff". Money was tight so we found a frame that fitted my pocket and she liked the look and size of (about the same size as yours - 16" Diamond back, turns out frame is lighter than mine ) and then use all collected parts I had gained. Started riding on some dirt roads round Jonkershoek in Stellies, beautiful riding, good views and not to steep. Now she tries to beat her time everytime we do the loop. Basically, you can't make her ride stuff you like, so be patient and just enjoy the view. Get her stoked on riding in general and see where it goes. So I say it don't matter, but I recon if someone whats a go and wants to learn then do a HT first. Cheaper to maintain, will teach you how to ride properly and not let the suspension mask your imperfections.
Fulmenicilus Posted July 15, 2009 Share See if you can borrow a dual sus that she can try out before you go off spending R30k on a bike!

Wernervdmerwe Posted July 15, 2009 Share Pity you not in the Cape, else you could have used my wife's bike for a weekend or so. Going to a LBS and sitting on the bike and taking a ride through the parking lot is great, but nothing beats feeling it in action. Then afterwards chatting about how this one felt compared to that one etc. Had to go through 4 dual frames for my wife before she decided to rather go back to horse endurance riding! I share your concern and pain
