I have a set of Rolf Dolomite MTB rims.

I think some of the spokes on the rear wheel were overtightened and over time the rim has started showing hairline cracks around two of the nipples.

Is there anyway to fix this?

I have looked at getting a replacement 20 spoke V brake rim but I havent found anything at all.

Anyone?

Johan better come and comment, personally If I had a hairline crack in a rim I would retire it. Best post a pic so we can see the extent of the damage.

You are about to discover the joys of standard wheels using standard rims, spokes and nipples, built on Shimano SLX or XT hubs.

Your Dolomite/Shlolomites are behind you, look forward.

You won't find 20-hole MTB V-brake rims anywhere, and if you do, you'll have to change the spokes to accommodate the new rims. It's not worth it.

Bite the bullet and have yourself a set of standard wheels made up that can be fixed by anyone, in any province, using freely-available parts.

Oh, and finally, the nipples didn't crack, the rim cracked. The rim cracked not because it was tensioned too much, but because it was made from a material too weak for the job. A 20-spoke wheel needs to be highly-tensioned in order to stay true and paired with a crappy, anodised rim, you have a recipe for wheels that live as long as a mayfly.

The rims cracked from metal fatigue - if a few nipples were too tight, the wheel would not have been true. The nipples were therefore all of equal tension. With a 32-spoke wheel you have (32-20)/20 times less cyclical fatigue. In other words, all things being equal, a 32-spoke wheel will last .6 times longer than a 20-spoke wheel. In practice it is much more than that since the overlay of static force (spoke tension) on top of cyclical tension (as the wheel rolls), fatigues the rims more than the 0.6 advantage.

The short version: toss the rims and start over.

I do have a second set of rims, but the rolfs were super duper light! smiley2.gif

Would anyone still want the hubs for anything?
